So, do you not know your own likes and dislikes when it comes to film? Except for me, and maaaaaybe one or two others in the world, no one knows what they're talking about for the most part.

Here are the steps I take when trying to decide if I should watch a film, or not. They may also work for you and other people.
  1. Read a brief synopsis of a film and/or seek out the film's trailer for watching.

That's it. It's that easy! I know myself well enough, more so than any other person on an internet forum would know me, that I know what I'll want to watch or purchase with my money. I hope it works out for you as well as it does for me.

Lucky stroke! I was at a used bookstore and they had a nice copy of "Sid & Nancy" Criterion for $14.

Nice find, I've seen it sell for 100.00 + on eBay.

I've owned my copy since it was first released along with This is Spinal Tap.

That is one movie among many from Criterion, that is hard to find at a reasonable price. I am still hunting.

I'd suggest: Bigger Than Life, The Night of the Hunter, The Red Shoes, Stagecoach, or Summer Hours

Coooooooooooooooooooool!

But being that I'm in college, all my (little) extra money that I have need to go to my blu-rays addiction, so I can't really get the pressbook.

I just watch this the other day. It was on one of the hd movie channels. I really liked it. Hopefully they will get the rights back. I would love to see a blu-ray release.

With that comment, you've now upped the ante for this thread. Good job. Keep it up and those Facebook users will have nothing on this thread.

Yes, I can assure that I am capable of determining my own taste. The Criterions all look great, and it makes it hard to decide. And yes, I am very capable of reading a synopsis and watching a trailer. I am a lifelong film fan and am pretty knowledgeable, just trying to increase my scope with the Criterion Collection. If somebody recommends something that I am not that into, I won't buy it, but many of them are hard to choose between for me, with my own taste (which I have developed, thank you!). Just because I asked for others to help me make a bit more informed decision, do you need to make such a pretentious remark?

Pretentious remark? You must have me, CC - a resident smarta$$, confused with our resident pretentious poster, CG.

My remark comes from my own inner frustration of witnessing other people's inability to do their own homework and come to their own conclusions about life and the aspects contained within... this includes choosing for themselves and making informed decisions.

It's okay, though. We, as in the Internet, still love you, and you're more than welcome to play in here anytime you feel.

Agreed! Either you've got to trust reviews and/or have NetFlix or something similar at your disposal.

I rented Army of Shadows from NetFlix and liked it enough to buy it the other day at B & N for $26.xx I watched it for the second time today and really enjoyed it even more than the first time.

Directors are a very personal choice and only YOU can decide what and who you like.

Melville has now joined my list along with Bergman, Ozu, Wenders, Ray, and Kubrick.

Okay people, you don't have to make a joke of me anymore. I'm just trying to be a fellow film fan, and hear some opinions.

By the way, I own The Darjeeling Limited and I think that it's a great film. Even though it may be "cool" in this thread to think it isn't.
