I thought I would post my final summary of purchases made in the last week or so (thanks to B&N coupons/deals). And thanks to this forum for only invigorating my interest in all things Criterion, quickly making me a rabid collector [and a much poorer man]

Seven Samurai
M
8 1/2
Army of Shadows
Cronos
The Seventh Seal
The Magician
Paths of Glory
BBS Story
Gomorrah
Wings of Desire
Revanche
Videodrome
Broadcast News
Pierrot Le Fou

And all ready present in my collection prior to this spending splurge:

The Thin Red Line
Benjamin Button
Days of Heaven

On Order:
The Double Life of Veronique

On Preorder:
Kes
Fear and Loathing
Blow Out
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Le Cercle Rouge
Amarcord

already starting to save for the July B&N sale (since i won't have much saved in 3 weeks or so if there is a February sale) my wish list is "only" the following titles. looking at it now... i REALLY gotta start saving lol

[Show spoiler]8 ½
Antichrist
Au revoir les enfants
Che
Cronos
The Darjeeling Limited
Days of Heaven
The Double Life of Veronique
Everlasting Moments
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Last Year at Marienbad
Paris, Texas
Repulsion
Revanche
Summer Hours
The Thin Red Line
Videodrome

ouch. that's 17 titles. and at $20 a piece (before tax, shipping and knowing some will be more than $20 a piece ) that comes to $340!

but if i start saving now, it won't seem so bad. but if i would just buy all these with no money saved in July, then that would hurt the 'ol credit card quite a bit lol

Here's my e-mail to Criterion asking about certain titles being out-of-stock at online retailers... and their response.

Quote:
While I have you here, do you happen to know what's going on with the "Scenes From A Marriage" DVD and some of the other discs (i.e. "Chungking Express" blu-ray)? Amazon has been out of stock of "Scenes From A Marriage" since I know before December because my girlfriend tried ordering it for me for Christmas. I actually just received a copy that I ordered from Walmart's website, of all places. You could tell it was probably in their warehouse for a while, though, cause the thing was covered in dust. I've just been speculating that most of these titles that seem to be missing from the major online retailers are missing due to repackaging and/or re-pressing. Are you able to shed any light? Thanks.
Quote:
Yes, you're absolutely right; we are currently changing over packaging on all of these films. Once that process is complete, they should be back in stock!

Best,
JM
So, there you go. No one should be paying the astronomical prices on titles like the "Chungking Express" blu-ray from Amazon resellers.

Looks like a pretty good start. Two more words should be in one of those lists: Red Desert. And a few more while I'm at it: Last Year At Mariendbad.

SpiderBaby, did you see this article from last weekend? Thought you might be interested, especially since you mentioned the documentary.

I'm also fairly new to Godard and Breathless was a pretty painless introduction. It was a blind buy during the Nov sale and while I wasn't bowled over in a 'Paths of Glory' sort of way I didn't feel like I was doing homework either.

In fact, I watched one of the supplements immediately after watching the film and I amost never do that.

Thanks for that. Looks like I'll be waiting a little longer for Chungking.

Thanks for the information. I Nexflixed Scenes From a Marriage last December and had been looking in vain everywhere for a reasonably priced copy since. I finally grabbed one from a third party seller on Amazon a few days ago for $40.48 shipped. Haven't received it yet - supposedly new, viewed once from a private collection and a reputable dealer.

Great movie and I highly recommend it to anyone; especially if you love Bergman.

I really hope there is no sale soon. I just quit my job and plan on being unemployed for the next 4-6 months and don't really have a couple hundred extra to spend on Criterions

It's a really interesting story (which was lifted almost scene for scene by The Magnificent Seven), the performances are stellar, the direction and production are as good as it gets (or arguably have ever gotten) and the restoration is simply fantastic.

So why only 'probably'?

It's a three hour long, black-and-white, sub-titled samurai movie.

Any one of those raises 'ymmv' flags.

(btw it's only $37.49 at Amazon right now)

(btw 2: the box and booklet are pretty freaking cool too)
That is a pretty fair assessment, thanks for that. I got it for Christmas along with The Seventh Seal, I watched Seven Samurai yet but look forward to it more now, thanks.
