Just saw that and thought I'd thrown in my rare/OOP Criterion DVD haves:

1. Sid and Nancy
2. Silence of the Lambs

EDIT: took Beauty and the Beast off the list, didn't mean to confuse with the earlier release, thank you for correcting me ;P

Beauty and the Beast is OOP? Since when?

I would definitely say there are a few:

The Third Man
Seven Samurai
The Seventh Seal
Yojimbo
The Last Picture Show

There are really only a few CC DVDs that hold similar value to me. They are:

Grand Illusion
Night Train to Munich
Traffic (Soderberg)

Rashomon
Brazil
(These two will last until the blu is eventually released)

"Grand Illusion", "Rashomon," and "Brazil" I agree with. I would also add "The Bicycle Thieves" to that list.

Completely off-topic, but did you see the midnight showing of "Rock N' Roll High School" at the Capital Theater?

Thanks for the "Joan of Arc" mention.

I'd probably switch Rashomon for Grand Illusion but that's just me. Also, I think it's a testament to how great Passion of Joan of Arc is that even if you watch it without the sound, it's still just as emotionally gripping.

Not surprising, since pretty much everything Tarantino has done reeks of things Godard did first,.. And Godard was a big fan of Fuller- he even cast him as himself in Pierre le fou.

lol @ 'The Battleship Potemkin,' that sure has a lot of rewatchablitiy.(yes I made this word up)
I won't buy into the Wes thing here, but looking at this collection, it eerily reminded me of my own priorities in collecting blurays... to me it includes many absolutely essential films (although I must admit I've never seen Battleship Potemkin).

I don't have that many blurays, but many of them on that list are ones I've considered as high-priority buys. As far as comedy, I find that many of my favourites comedies are still only available on DVD - Marx Brothers, Preston Sturges, Billy Wilder...

while B-locked Eureka has it on Blu-Ray. i have it and it's magnificent. i have both the Criterion SD and the MOC BD ;P big fan of McCarey!

Today, I couldn't wait to call and tell my parents how wonderful they are, and told them how much I appreciate everything about them.

And may these words live in infamy: If you haven't cried by the end of watching "Make Way For Tomorrow", you are a heartless person and I hope you die an unexpected slow and painful death.

i consider myself a fan of all types of films and i think i have a fairly balanced view of a variety of films. understanding hard2watch films like Enter the Void, Killer Inside Me to silent films like Keaton/Chaplin/Murnau through golden age of cinema (like McCarey mentioned above) Ford, Hitchcock, to BBS age, through modern day stuff like Star Wars through postmodern artsy fartsy stuff to enjoying a random Adam Sandler movie and even crap like Meet the Spartans and so on.

and so it's always been difficult for me to have a 'favorite film of all time' and i totally understand it when critics are asked that or any film-enthusiasts/lovers are questioned why don't they have one. however, my response to that is that i do, indeed, have one and only one Seven Samurai! =)

but again, as previous readers warn you... it's NOT at all like John Woo HK action movies. in fact, a lot of today's viewers will proclaim how slow, boring, etc.etc.etc. it is. but if you have seen it a # of times (like me) i think you will slowly realize that it is already at a breakneck speed plot-wise . and oh what an ending!!!!!!!!!! =).

i also luv the influences to the film and from the film. Kurosawa was inspired by earlier Ford westerns (maybe Stagecoach?). then... Magnificent Seven was inspired by 7Sam. it's such a monumental piece of film history! but beyond that... Kurosawa continued creating and making a whole string of classics (30 in his lifetime). so all-in-all, i would consider his film Seven Samurai "priceless". i have the 1st 2 Criterion releases and the most recent triple disc DVD. obviously when the Blu-Ray came out, i think i threw a party or somn ;P. i just hope that the AK25 set comes out on Blu-Ray one of these days! also if som1 has the subtitle for the 31st disowned union film, lemme know ;P

Like the poster above mentions, i live in Denmark so my only option is importing. On Axelmusic.com (great site) i can get it for 45 dollars (250 DKK) shipped! I've always wanted to watch Akira's movie, but i just never got around to... like you said its really long and in Japanese. Then again, it is #10 on IMDB so it should be pretty good! I will buy it, i feel like broadening my horizon and check out some deep and significant pictures, rather than all the crazy 'Hong Kong action movies 'i've been watching lately... Plus i'm a sucker for awesome packaging and extras!

I just got a 'Region A' Blu Ray player so i'm dying to get some of those amazing Region Locked Blu Rays (and DVD's) you guys have. Like Criterion, which supposedly produces some of the best
