Those in the know- how long does it usually take Jon at Criterion to respond to email?

Usually in a day or two or he doesn't respond at all.

I post them right when I get them. Broadcast News arrived late and I still haven't received the February titles.

I think it's taken as long as a week to get a response in my experience.

I just got confirmation from Barnes that Pierrot Le Fou is en route to my house, so whoever is looking to add that to the collection for a 'standard' price, I suggest going there.

In the most recent episode of Ebert Presents At the Movies, there was a short section on the Scorsese/Gucci restoration of The Leopard, mentioning that it's now being released in theatres and coming to Blu-ray disc. Could be that they're just misinformed on what's actually out there, but I hope this either means Criterion loses the rights or is forced to re-release it properly.

I think Criterion has quite good relationship with Fox at the moment. They could reach an agreement that Criterion's release stays in print while Fox releases their own Blu-ray.

I'd love to see US digibook release of The Leopard from Fox, like the French one.

if u read the "director's cut" of the gunslinger, Dark Tower is inspired by both Lord of the Rings (the books) and The Good, The Bad, The Ugly films.

back to Criterion... i wish the cardboards were stronger IN GENERAL. i've found that all my cardboard BDs (even Apocalypse Now, which isn't Criterion) have structural integrity issues. it's easy to rip them if you are NOT careful. while opening Apocalypse Now, i ripped 1of the corners. it's so flimsy.

agreed. i figure part of why they do this is because it's cheaper than the plastic cases (maybe, no real idea though) but i wish they would (not just Criterion but all companies) have it covered in a thin plastic casing that the cardboard slides in and out of. very much like the Fear & Loathing DVD that Criterion released years ago. why it has that plastic cover with a few graphics? i have no idea, but that would be a genius idea to have come with the cardboard packaging and also fancier packaging like the Alien Anthology and tv show seasons like Deadwood, Rome, True Blood (among others) so the color doesn't get scratched off / packaging doesn't get as dinged up.

Scored today at my local record store:

The Man who Fell to Earth [Blu] - $35 (new)

The Third Man [DVD] - $21 (used - but "like" new)

Hoping to trade/sell The Third Man and put that money towards the Blu version.

Not too shabby!

Since I already have the Artificial Eye DVD, I'll probably wait until I can find this on sale. I'll pick it up eventually, though.

Yes, I do remember reading that Leone was a big influence on the first book, hence the western feel. I like how the other books are all pretty different from each other in some way.

And on a Criterion related note, I ordered Amarcord and Fish Tank from B&N, but both will be shipping on the 22nd...unless, of course, there's a delay...

Sweet Smell of Success is down to $24.99

The number of "Day-1" Criterion titles Amazon has been having for $24.99 is a very pleasant change!

My wife gave me Pierrot le fou yesterday, she's awesome. I think it is an interesting film to say the least. It was the first Godard work I have seen. Which leads me to this question:
How is the packaging for Breathless? The same as The 400 Blows, The Last Emperor, etc? Or is it just a slipcase around a plastic case? I hate the digipaks, and I don't understand why Criterion has used them.

Breathless is a digipak, but it is their new style of BD digipak that is very similar to the DVD digipaks. The cardboard slipbox only has a slit in the side (not top and bottom), and the digipak slides out of it - this means the package as a whole is much sturdier, and there's no chance of it falling out the bottom when you pick it up off the shelf.

The 400 Blows, Last Emperor, etc. used the old-style BD digipak, which many complained about and has since been phased out (i.e. no new titles will use it, and old titles will be re-released in different packaging once the current allotments sell out).
