Thats what I used to think. But with coupons and sales you can get these for a decent price.

I have started importing films and THAT is expensive

Canada Criterion Collection

I've caught the Criterion bug pretty badly. Picked up 7 of them this month:

Breathless
8 1/2
Seven Samurai
Pierrot Le Fou
Army of Shadows
Last Year at Marienbad
Seventh Seal

Saw Man Who Fell To Earth used for $21 a couple of months back. Didn't know it was OOP. I am kicking myself hard!

Where can Canadians scoop up Criterions for good deals?

That was my first Criterion as well.

I strongly suggest picking up Revanche, The 400 Blows, and Paris, Texas. Those films changed my life. Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line are amazing as well, along with many others.

FutureShop seems to be the best retailer. My wife bought a couple from the US Barnes and Noble when they had a good deal on. I guess Amazon.ca is pretty good too. HMV is more expensive than FutureShop, and have pretty much the same selection.

Seems there may be a chance yet. Just did a little bit of scanning this forum, which led me back to the post I vaguely recalled that mentioned 3 Fassbinder titles acquired by Olive Films. Cross checked that at criterion forum and those appear to be: "Despair, Uncut versions of The Stationmaster’s Wife and I Only Want You To Love Me".

So still a possibility from Criterion, but there's also a contradictory post, perhaps the source of my confusion that sez "I believe Olive has already picked this up, so no dice on Criterion." Given the three titles mentioned as being Olive's, perhaps this was an incorrect post, null and void?

And then there's Criterion's year-old Mulvaney response: 'At this time, we do not have any plans to release "World on a Wire" but thank you for the suggestion.' Maybe, just maybe, they took the suggestion seriously. Or maybe someone will figure out who, if anybody, will be putting it out in the U.S instead. Sure would like to see it get a decent release in the U.S.

Default Ride With the Devil

I finally got around to watching Ride with the Devil last night. It was a blind buy from the November B&N sale that for some reason I always seemed to hover over then pass by when I searched my collection for a movie to watch. That was a mistake. It is a great film, with outstanding performances and cinematography. It is a take on the Civil War in the Missouri borderlands, very foreboding and effective in its mixture of drama, dialogue, character development, and explosions of violence. Its use of language is superb, and the raid on Lawrence, Kansas - and the dramatic build-up to it - is haunting and sticks with you afterwards. Ang Lee is one hell of a director.

The film is one of the best I have ever seen at bringing the time-period into my living room and giving me a sense of just how terrible it was when life-long neighbors and friends turned on each other. It does so many things well, including the issue of slavery and racism from a local and individual perspective. Jeffrey Wright is terrific. I think the film also does an effective job of conveying how, after the war, the bitterness and the prevalence of irregular guerrilla action throughout the region could give rise to the James-Younger gangs and the sympathies the locals had for them (which is why it took so many years for these gangs to finally be run to ground).

Anyway, I rank it among my favorite Criterions and definitely recommend it. I am surprised it doesn't get mentioned more in this forum.

I have only seen two of his films - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and now Ride With the Devil.

Oops..corrected original post to Jeffrey Wright...Jeremy Wright is a co-worker and not much of an actor, to my knowledge.

I've been curious about this film for a while. There isn't much info available, and I've asked about it a couple times in this thread and no one has said anything. I was thinking it wasn't very good, even the review on this site is kind of vague. I may get this on your recommendation, as I've been on the edge for a while.

I have a handful of Criterion DVDs; I'm fairly new to Blu Ray as it is. I'm thinking of starting my foray into the world of Criterion Blu with The Thin Red Line. Good place to start?

I picked up Ride With the Devil recently and am looking forward to watching it when things get a little less busy. I really like some of Ang Lee's films (Ice Storm for example, which I hope makes it onto blu soon--I still only have an early, non-Criterion version), but am less thrilled about others. Based on subject matter alone I think I will like this one. Your recommendation helps too

If you like Malick in general or this film in particular, absolutely. The blu is stunning.

In my opinion, it is a very good movie and one that can be seen many times. The pq and aq is very strong. Watch some trailers of it on Youtube.

I am glad I read the good Dr.'s review on this site after I watched the movie. Some big spoilers in there.

Hey guys, I need some help here. There is a deal somewhere on the internet in a trade forum I will not reveal to you, that I can get 4 criterions for $70 shipped from someone. I'm picking Seventh Samurai since I've heard alot about it. The other ones are blind buys for me also. Please help me pick 3 more titles...

Any recommendations are GREATLY appreciated.
