I got ya. I wasn't thinking you thought that anyways. I meant for it to be a chuckle type comment.

Have we known for sure that Sweet Smell of Success Blu is in a plastic case, because that will suck knowing that inside photo that will be in the dvd package won't be a fold-out digi.

All the money I thought I was saving these first few months will definitely be blown in May. So many great titles that month.

I hear all the talk of the Great Dictator cover. I just hope people understand it before they slam it. I think if you have seen the film, you would think it is basically a great description of the film through the cover art.

So wait, is The Sweet Smell of Success going to be released in digipack or plastic snapcase?

Honestly, I could care less about the cover art. The content on the disc(s) is what's important. Packaging, artwork, etc is all a luxury.

Is it just me or do commentaries seem to be happening less and less frequently on Criterion releases?

When the director doesn't speak English, or the film was from the 30's etc.... perhaps it comes down to a situation where the commentaries they CAN get, may not be something they feel is important enough to use....

That's just a theory of course.

i would say just in overall general there are less commentaries than i think used to be. which sucks because i LOVE listening to commentaries, and a number of new release reviews that i've read the last few days have been absent of a commentary track, and any sort of substantial special features, which again, sucks

good point. for older films, the director, stars, and others may no longer be alive or want anything to do with their older works. however, i would still enjoy a commentary of some sort - professional reviewers, historians, newer actors / actresses reviewing a film that influenced them (like Clooney, Pitt, Streep or others) or something like that, to be done.

which reminds me, i have been meaning to listen to Ebert's commentaries on Dark City and Gone With the Wind.

I think the cover looks great too. I like how it is very different from the Modern Times cover. It will definitely stand out on the shelf. I like the newer covers. This is what seperates CC releases from any other releases on the shelves of the stores and your home. Honestly, this is why you pay the premium. You may not like what you see, but the effort is there and that alone should be commended. Why would you want to pay a premium for some 'screenshot' pasted on the front. There is thought and art involved in these covers and I for one really appreciate it. I saw a comment about someone thinking CC 'just mailed it in' on the Solaris cover. That is funny to hear, because a small independent company that relies on these releases as main revenue would never 'mail it in'. The dvd covers from previous CC release were sort of the norm as what other studios were doing. These are a nice shot in the arm for a newer format and business venture for CC. I hope they keep them coming. As I stated before, that Diabolique cover is the best I have seen so far.

I agree. When I first saw it I wasn't sure, but the more I think about it the more I like it. I think it works very well, and I think the red is a big part of what makes it work.

True, but this never stopped them before. They always had scholars or film historians commentate which were usually more informative and insightful than most filmmakers commentaries.

While the Chaplin cover is in your face red, I believe it fits with the theme of the movie very well. I am looking forward to it, amongst some of the others.

I'm sure some of the people who have commented on how terrible the cover is has seen the film and understand where it's coming from. I hate the cover too. It's just bland and as Pyoko stated, the Topsy Turvy Cover did it better. There are elements in the film that they could have used to good effect such as the Double Cross logo or the globe with possibly some Constructivist design. Well, the cover sure won't stop me from getting it.

Same here bugsy...they shipped mine on 2/12. My last Royal Mail came in about 5-6 days, so I think they are back to their usual speedy and predictable routine.
