Chaplin was under a little less stress at the time because he was in the U.S.!

I have read on the forums that Amazon uses those bubble envelopes quite often. I have never received anything from them in that packaging, whether ordering one or multiple BDs. My Seven Samurai came from them and it was perfect.

!
I'm surprised. When I order from B&N, the packaging is a stiff cardboard wrap with a pocket for the BD (or DVD) that is centered in the packaging away from any edges. I love this packaging and have never received anything damaged.

When I order books from Amazon, they usually come in cardboard boxes with the books sometimes shrinkwrapped to a separate piece of cardboard. That works also. But BD and CD orders from Amazon usually come in soft packaging and I've found that there's almost always minor damage. I greatly prefer the B&N packaging.

But with both vendors, the packaging you receive depends in part on which warehouse the order is shipped from. (And I believe that some orders are actually drop shipped by the publisher or distributor, even though it's sent in B&N or Amazon packaging.)

I'm assuming that if one were to buy movies directly from the CC website that CC would receive more of the proceeds than if one were to order from Amazon.com...but does anyone know if it is that much of a difference? I'd be willing to order more from the CC website if I knew CC was receiving more of the funds...I don't mind spending a little more on something I love (knowing that CC is getting a little more for their fine product)

Yes, the stress in the US came about a decade later, courtesy of Senator McCarthy.

Wow, the news about Something Wild made my day.

That movie was treated poorly on DVD (it only had a trailer), and even though the Blu seems to be rather bare compared to other Criterion titles, I'm sure it's going to be a great transfer. The film has always been a fave and it's one less title for MGM to botch.

Only 28 days in February and yesterday was 14th. As simple as that.

If a disc is sold for the same price on both Amazon and the Criterion website then Criterion's additional profit is exactly the difference between what they sold it to Amazon for (wholesale) and the retail price. Since the wholesale price probably isn't published anywhere one can only guess the difference.

If Amazon is selling something for $25 I would guess they probably bought it for around $15, give or take a couple of dollars. In this example, Criterion would be making an additional $10 on the sale.

Wow, mine came about 20 minutes ago. I love getting stuff at work now. I'm always guaranteed to get it before 5 pm (which is when UPS comes to my house).

I have many older films to catch up first. I'm still waiting on the last 3 from the BBS set, along with the Fuller films.

By the way, Broadcast News, and now Still Walking, say 2.0 surround on the back cover. I know I asked about this when I received Broadcast News, and I know how to decode it on my receiver properly, but the specs online are listed as DTS-HD MA 5.1, not 2.0 surround.

If you decode it in Pro Logic, you'll get 5.1 surround, so why not just encode it in 5.1?

Still Walking looks very interesting. I too really enjoy films that make me feel as though I have watched normal people go about their lives. I'm excited for this. It's available in Canada but I don't think anybody has it yet.

It'll be decoded in a 5.1 lossy equivalent if I'm not mistaken.

I'll have to pop my copy of Broadcast News back in to check, but I seem to recall watching it in 2.0

I do! It was shipped from amazon.ca on release day and arrived last Friday.
Decent price, too, given what criterions usually retail for.

a) It's not really "true" 5.1.
b) It would be a waste of space.
c) It wouldn't be the original audio, and Criterion is pretty big on that.

I don't think the specs ever said it was 5.1, just that it was DTS-HD MA, which it is.
