For what it is, yes it is, it's as perfect as it's gonna be. This stuff was "filmed in space" using 8 and 16 mm film stock, it's not gonna look like Baraka! I find this film a perfect companion to films like Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff. I'm more than glad I got the Criterion blu-ray of For All Mankind.

If you keep refreshing Criterion's home page, you'll see the broken image link for "AK 100: 25 Films By Akira Kurosawa" pop-up under the DVD Coming Soon banner at the bottom of the page.

And for those who haven't yet seen it, both Home Theater Forum and Criterionforum.org have images up for the Kurosawa set, which lists the 25 films and shows the book included.

So, I'm thinking that'll probably be the only other Criterion release for December.

Ouch!

AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa on DVD (SRP $399, but it's available for pre-order on Amazon for just $299).

$12 each.... can't beat that! I bet it dips down to $225 or so on Amazon within a couple months of release.

I wonder what the BD pricing would look like since the prices for Criterion DVDs seem to be the same for the most part.

Nice Collection even though I already have 6 of those titles on DVD. I would only do it if they were BD.....no going backwards on a set that big and $.

I would like to see the ones "Never before on DVD" be released as single releases at some point, maybe 2010.

I would like that, too... and there would be no reason not to release something as recent as Madadayo on blu, it was released in 1993. There is no way I would pick this set up on dvd though, as I own 13 of them already.

I picked up LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD from Criterion but haven't watched it yet. Interesting to see Studio Canal has released their own Blu of it. Will be interested to hear comparisons. Here's the Studio Canal details:

French, German DTS-HD Master Audio Dual Mono

Bonus Features:
* Introduction by G.Vincendeau
* Alain Robbe-Grillet
* In the Labyrinth of Marienbad
* Trailer
* Short Film: Toute la Mémoire
* Short Film: Chant du Styréne
* BD-Live Access

Question for you guys:

Do you trust buying Criterion Blu-rays on eBay? I've seen some good deals on both used and new discs, but I know the DVDs were plagued with fakes, etc.

Just getting your 2 cents!

Personally I am waiting until the "Black Friday" sale at Deep Discount and then I'm going to get the likes of Seventh Seal. It's usually around 25% off I think.

I'm not sure. I just remember getting the Godfather Trilogy and L.A. Confidential last year for a lot cheaper than I could from Amazon or Deep Discount normally.

Just checked my order and the price for Godfather Trilogy at the time was $61.85 and L.A. Confidential was $21.83. Both of them were relatively new releases at the time and DD's price was similar to Amazon's, maybe even lower than Amazon's. I ended up paying $46.39 for Godfather Trilogy and $16.37 for L.A. Confidential. Pretty sweet deal.

Sometimes. I bought The 400 Blows at the last sale but I left Repulsion behind because they upped it.
