I watched A SAFE PLACE from the BBS set last night. I understand a plot isn't always needed for a film to work that often the feeling it conveys is enough....

With that said, I was really disappointed. I know what Jaglom was going for but it just didn't work. It's shot in a European art style but the editing seems arbitrary-- there are cuts for no reason at all. They don't heighten the experience or convey any feeling. Without Tuesday Weld's gorgeous face to look at for 92 minutes and some great show tunes I probably would've shut it off. Also, I don't think Welles had any idea what kind of film he was in.

I rarely say a film Criterion issues is not worthy of the collection. A SAFE PLACE (and its partner on the disc DRIVE HE SAID) has no place in the collection. I'd post this on CF but they'd counter by saying thematically it fits in the set. It's a stinker, thematically or not, it has no place in the collection.

I too received a plastic replacement case for The Third Man (after a 6 week backorder). I assumed the booklets wouldn't be an option, even for discs not OOP so I didn't even bother to ask.

I'm not anti-digibook but the main problem with the Criterion version is that they lack the structural integrity of a plastic case. I bought The Third Man on eBay (a week before it went OOP ) and it was shipped in one of those bubble envelopes. The plastic casing cracked during shipping. So now instead of having an OOP Criterion Blu-ray still in the shrinkwrap I have an opened but never watched OOP Criterion Blu-ray in a plastic replacement case.

I was under the impression the movies were included based on who produced them (BBS), not due to any underlying theme. I mean, what on Earth could Head share thematically with The Last Picture Show? Speaking of Head, IMO that is also a waste of disc space.

Hulu+ sounds more and more appealing...but still not sure. I'm debating changing my Netflix plan from 2 to 1 disc at-a-time and starting up the Hulu...decisions decisions...

then again, I prefer owning the movies than streaming or renting...

I'm nowhere near the point of spending money on streamed movies, but assuming someday I will be, I'm glad Criterion is going to Hulu exclusively. I've been boycotting Netflix for at least ten years now and don't plan to stop that.

You've been boycotting Netflix for more than 10 years? Man, you're way ahead of the curve. They didn't become complete bastards until relatively recently. Also:

Well that sucks about Netflix, the huge selection of Criterion's that can be streamed is one of the main reasons I love netflix so much.

White Material is being released in select art theatres 3/4/2011. Naturally, don't expect it at your local corporate multiplex

Are there criterion titles that include 2 blu discs, and are packaged in clear plastic? I'd like to make a custom case for seven samurai since I go to that one fairly often... And I'm not sure what to request when I order my other replacements.

Really? It was playing at a place here in Atlanta in January.

No, Criterion has not made a custom 2-disc plastic case for their blu-rays.

If you want things to be uniform and match, your only options might be to...

a) buy an extra single-disc replacement case and put the extra disc inside a sleeve in the case, which is what many people have done with the "Benjamin Button" 2-disc release that comes in the regular blue-colored blu-ray case.
b) try to wrangle a 2-disc clear DVD case from Criterion, which will probably be difficult.

Criterion uses cases made from Scanavo, which are sometimes difficult to find from online retailers in quantities less than 100 per order... and that's only for the Scanavo DVD cases that Criterion uses. The clear blu-ray cases are custom-made for Criterion, and I've never come across them online.

No, they were complete bastards years ago. I canceled my subscription after it became clear they were holding discs for awhile before releasing them to me because I was watching too many. They lost a class action lawsuit about this a number of years later. I didn't participate because all you got was two free months of a subscription and I didn't want anything to do with their site. PLUS they use annoying pop-ups as a form of advertising. Why support a company that does that?

You a fan of Mondo CC? I ordered this print today, and probably own 15 or so other ones. Can't get enough.

Not a fan of anything, really. I see that the poster is now sold out, though. I guess it doesn't take long when there are only 200 available.
