I would suggest he starts by collecting the cardboard sleeves that are on the cases meant to make the product stand out on the retail shelves for their first run.... since most people throw them out as trash, he could band together with other people collecting them and then values could be assigned to them within this group where they could sell the cardboard to each other, discussing why some of these cardboard sleeves are better to look at than others.

That would be a pretty fun group right there.

EDIT:

Region "B" but for those with the ability, good pre-order price on Bicycle Thieves.

My thoughts on Hulu Plus so far that I just posted at criterionforum.org...

Quote:
Is anyone else that is using Hulu Plus through their PS3 having better luck than I am?

I just signed up for the 1-week "free trail" to give it a test drive, and so far I'm not too impressed. I've used the regular ol' Hulu in the past on my computer, but I'm not fairing too well using my PS3 and TV.

I was quite impressed at first, actually, because I went straight to the Criterion section and chose to see how "Summertime" looked. It loaded up and played just as well as anything from Netflix that I've ever streamed... no complaints. However, I then thought I would try to stream something a little less demanding (i.e. movie trailers) and I can't get one single trailer to load and play for me... not even the 53 second "Smurfs" trailer. As a matter of fact, I've been staring at a Loading screen on my TV for over 10 minutes now. The software has locked-up my whole PS3. I can't get it to respond at all using the remote control.

The first rule of the club, is that movie f'n sucks.

The Fincher and Norton boners is something I never got. Oh well, to each his own. No harm done.

I save that type of "praise" for things like "Ghost Rider" (you know.... the stuff you shouldn't have watched in the first place, but figured it just might be so bad it's good..... but you were terribly wrong....)

I certainly don't understand why so many people think that movie is "Great" though..... I bought it cheap, since I didn't own it on DVD, and couldn't really remember the last time I saw it... My wife even said "Why did you buy that?? You don't even like that movie!"

I did give it to a friend-of-a-friend (along with a couple of others) so at least I did my good deed (assuming he doesn't feel the same way about the film as you )

I don't know about great but after a few viewings I have come to think it's pretty good.

The 'consumer culture' shell is pretty silly and superficial but the characters (character?) were pretty interesting. In fact, I thought its most intesting social commentary was that Norton was having a genuine psychotic break and HBC thought he was just another emotionally unavailable guy.

I try to show people I'm not bashing them or their likes. I just see a movie that was brought up so I thought I give my 2 cents to it. Not bashing it for a reply back or anything. So I have to start putting careful things at the end so people don't think otherwise and it's just me having fun on a forum and not being an a-hole.

I thought the film was interesting plot-wise, but I never saw how it was an anti-violence film or anything like that. In fact, the whole "fight club" aspect of Fight Club was the least interesting part of the film, in my opinion, and because the denouement of the film is so entangled with that part of the film, I felt like the film wasn't as good as it could have been, even though I found later that it followed the book closely.

...seems like I may be in the minority in thinking that Fight Club was (and is) a rather good film.

on another note:

Finally catching up on viewing some of my Criterion purchases.

Videodrome: Thought it was great. Was everything I love about '80s cinema (visually and special-effects) while also following a story that is so strange and weird that I absolutely love it. Best part was when I popped it in and my girlfriend asking "What the hell are you watching." Let's just say I finished the film on my own later that day.

The Double Life of Veronique: Also very much enjoyed it. While not a terribly "quick" story line, I very much liked the overall theme and that simple "what-if" sort of mentality. I know this one will require a few more viewings to fully grasp everything.

Armacord: Absolutely loved this film. I am now a Fellini lover. A film like this just reminds me how great it is to stumble upon a film that is so unique and just fun to watch.

Next up: The Magician, Broadcast News, Fish Tank (when it arrives) & the BBS boxset

Too funny on one hand, but on the other hand so sad to find that group really exists.
