Really wish it worked on pre-orders, there are many that I want coming in the next couple months.

Just saw Still Walking by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Fantastic film about the modern dysfunctional family and their awkward, although very human, interaction shown over the course of a 24-hour yearly reunion for a sibling's death. Direction, acting and story are exceptional. If you enjoy Japanese film, I highly recommend it. I would definitely like to add it to my collection in the near future.

I am slightly grumpy about missing the pre order boat and I can't decide between The Magician and Lola Montes. Also, M, but I always thought I would pick up the MOC version of that.

Hmmm.

Hmmm.
I'd still go with M out of those ones, Criterion version.

Yeah, I'm feeling guilty, but I ended up with M, Lola Montes, Videodrome, and Louie Blouie.

I do like supporting MOC whenever possible, but I guess it was not to be.

Ended up getting:

The Night of the Hunter
The Wages of Fear
Hunger

Does criterion do many sales such as this one? I'm guessing no, bit thought I'd check since I'm relatively new to the game.

If you missed out on Sweet Smell of Success at Criterion, B&N have it for 24.79 at the moment...plus there's a 15% coupon for members, and 10% for non-members. I got it on-line for $22.33 with tax shipped.

Not too bad if you don't feel like spending $50 to get free shipping.

I could have easily done five preorders and could have probably talked myself into a couple more.

I'm glad I controlled myself. It is tempting to go nuts with Criterion but if I kept putting stuff in my cart I may have missed the cutoff for half-price. I'm stoked I got Au Revoir Les Enfants and Solaris before Criterion "fixed" the code to stop working on preorders. Really nothing I'd want more than those two. Looking forward to them and at under $19 each shipped, the price is right!

Balls, I missed out on the deal for preorders.
Damn this time difference!

(yes I'm in Ireland, but I would have got them shipped to a friend over there)

Default Sweet Smell of Success....

Hey guys!

I am thinking of "Sweet Smell of Success", which would be a blind buy for me, so my questions are:

Do you think it'll be much cheaper on Amazon.com at some point?

Do you think I'd enjoy this movie comparing it with my other C titles in my collection?

Is it worth a blind-buy?

Ps: I love B/W films.

Thanks.

Never seen the film, but from a price point, when comparing this deal on Criterion vs Amazon, it all hinges on the additional cost of shipping.

Are you going to order more than $50 on Criterion to save $6 shipping? Do you have Amazon Prime for free shipping?

It would be $26 if you order only SSoS on Criterion.
It would be around $25 if you order on Amazon right now (need 1cent filler)

If you are just going by the price alone w/o shipping, I don't see Amazon selling a Criterion BD below $20, unless it's from a 3rd Party Seller.

The best question is will B&N have another Criterion sale...

I'm considering three blind buys.

8 1/2
Army Of Shadows
The Wages Of Fear

What are your thoughts on these titles?

A) Yes, it's worth a blind buy.

B) The Amazon price is unlikely to drop so I would say give Criterion $26 instead of Amazon $25 - if the hour between 6-7 last night was any indication they're goig to need to replace a lot fans and power supplies todayand could probably use the extra cash.

c) Based on your other Criterions I have no real idea whether you'd like SSoS. Based on Blade Runner and Casablanca with just pinch of Charade I think you might like it a lot.

But this is one of those fairly rare blid buy requests - the film is insteresting and strong enough to appeal to just about anybody but without turning them off along the way.

Haven't seen

Army Of Shadows
Very interesting, very engaging but fairly traditional drama. I've only seen it once and I didn't have any trouble connecting with or empathyzing with any of the major players. And it looks/sounds great. I have this and I'm glad I bought it

The Wages Of Fear
Very impressive film. A few minutes in had me wondering whether they were going to be able to ever build serious tension and if they did whether they'd be able to maintain it through - they did and they were. Quite masterfully at times, I must say. I streamed this one and as good as it is it's not really at the top of my rewatch list. I might pick it up at some point but there are more than a few others in front of it.
