Wasn't Godard supposed to get a lifetime achievement award?

Anyways, was good to see Kirk Douglas still alive and well. I hope those in attendance really understood how much of a legend the man is...

I have Une Femme Mariee and Le Mepris in my "basket" at Amazon.co.uk but I don't know if Criterion will release these or not (and I have them on DVD, so patience isn't too difficult) The reviews are very favorable, but of course there is room for improvement and I've double-dipped films I don't even care much about for marginal improvement, so I know I would want to double-dip these if they were released with more extras, better technicals, etc....

errr...

For those (like me ) waiting eagerly for any bit of evidence that we'll get the titles at $15.98 each from the "error" during the Criterion Collection 50,000 second sale....

It appears someone has received shipping confirmation:

Definitely pick up MOC's release of "Une Femme Mariee," Beta. It's a fantastic release with a freakin' 80-page booklet so you'd better get out those reading glasses. I think you can survive without the Studio Canal release of "Contempt" for now, though.

If you want, you could order directly from Eureka through this month's newsletter offers. The Godard disc is slightly more, but they have free shipping worldwide. If you contacted Kevin at Eureka through their customer service e-mail, I'm sure they would match Amazon's pricing.

So I am going to start getting into the Criterion films, and was wondering what are some good starter films to buy. Thanks!

My Suggestions:

The Thin Red Line
The Third Man (if you can find it)
Revanche (my own personal favorite - but maybe a bit slow for others)
Seven Samurai
Paths of Glory
M

Have fun!

Oh boy...I don't envy you at all Too many films to catch up!

Anyway, you'll get many different answers from many different people, but there will be a bunch of titles that a lot of us will mention, so...

Here's my .02:

Charade
Army of Shadows (slowly becoming my new favorite)
The Wages of Fear
Paths of Glory
Bottle Rocket
Bigger Than Life
Cronos
Revanche
Black Orpheus
Secret of the Grain
Seven Samurai
A Christmas Tale (saw it recently and really enjoyed it!)
Sweet Smell of Success (ditto)
Gomorrah
The 400 Blows

Man, I could go on and on...

With only 3 movies in your blu-ray.com collection it is really hard for me to know how your tastes lean. However, here is my own stab at your conundrum:

Generally Appealing Films
Charade
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Modern Times
The Night of the Hunter
Paths of Glory
The Red Shoes
Repulsion
Stagecoach

Foreign Films (Subtitles!)
Cronos
The Leopard
M
Seven Samurai
The Wages of Fear

Artsy-Fartsy Films
House
Last Year at Marienbad
Videodrome
Wings of Desire

Wages of Fear, 400 Blows, Seven Samurai, The Red Shoes, The Third Man, etc.

Wages of Fear is the best starting point. Very accessible film. (If you can wait, DIABOLIQUE is a good starting point, too).

If you're up for being challenged: Last Year at Marienbad. I know it's not for everyone but IF it is your kind of movie you will LOVE it. There's really nothing like it. It's terrific.

What ccfix said, but Le Mepris was a Criterion title that went out of print when Studio Canal took many of their titles back. Not likely to get a Criterion release again, or any other blu-ray re-release for that matter (still need to watch my copy). Fwiw, the U.S. version probably comes out to be a little cheaper; the packaging is different if you have a preference one way or the other for book (U.K.) vs whatever Lionsgate put out here.

Une Femme Mariee is stunning, should be in every blu-ray collection.

I would pick a very different 5 to start with, although there's certainly nothing wrong with the ones you picked.

I'd suggest:

Last Year at Marienbad (nothing like it)
The Thin Red Line (one of the best war films ever and the best PQ and AQ on Criterion to date)
400 Blows (one of the best films ever about childhood and just enjoyable)
Playtime (the most fun Criterion film on blu to watch, imo)
Seven Samurai (one of the top 5-10 films of all-time)

Runners up would be:

Days of Heaven (arguably the most beautiful film of all-time)
The Third Man (pretty much universally liked and great black and white photography)
For All Mankind (fantastic documentary, but it might not have a lot of replay value)
Everlasting Moments (profoundly moving and gorgeously photographed)

I personally would not suggest Wages of Fear, which is one of the few Criterions on blu that greatly underwhelmed me. The first 45 minutes were a bore and I found it a fatal flaw to purposely make all characters unsympathetic in a film that was about the tension of those individuals transporting nitroglycerine. It's not that it's a bad film, but in my opinion it could've been so much more. I also would strongly argue against The Red Shoes. As it's a ballet film, it's really not for everyone (even more so than most of the other Criterions available on blu).

I won Le Mepris on blu (American version). The PQ is very good at times and decent on other instances, but I'd still recommend it. I love the film.
