It is a thing of legend. Once announced by Criterion, only to be yanked from our quivering hands, never to be heard of again.

And I consider it a big deal if even I know about it (and I've only started collecting Criterion within the past couple months or so)

*And anyone please correct me if I'm wrong

Criterion had the distribution rights taken away from them by Studio Canal just before they were going to announce it as a release. The cover art and transfer were already supposedly completed.

hmm.... interesting. so i'm it's the Studio Canal version available on blu from amazon for $22 or so bucks?

i thought it was gonna be a Criterion title that only had one pressing or something. although hearing they had the rights taken away right before releasing it seems mysterious and suspicious...

I just received a shipping notice for the first of the five orders I placed during Criterion's '50,000 seconds' sale. Have any Canadians on here ordered directly from Criterion before? I'm a bit paranoid about how the duties etc will turn out given that they shipped via UPS. On the bright side, the prices during the sale were so much better than Canadian retail prices that even in the worst case scenario I won't have paid more than buying at Future Shop or Best Buy!

I still haven't had my items from the Criterion sale last week shipped. Anyone else?

I already have my order. Breathless and Fish Tank arrived earlier today. One of the few perks to living in Georgia is being so close.

Did you pay extra for fast shipping? Hoping I get mine by Friday for a great viewing weekend.

Mine shipped, but haven't arrived yet. Fish Tank, Still Walking, and for a twist, Robinson Crusoe on Mars.

I'm still waiting on shipment verification myself. I wonder if ordering America Lost and Found has something to do with it because that is the only one on the site that i see is listed as backordered. The rest are just out of stock.

Nope. It's almost always a two day shipping timetable when I have ordered direct from Criterion, even when it's free. I would have had it yesterday if the mail ran on Sunday. I hate checking the tracking and seeing something just "sitting" someplace. Heh.

Does Criterion sell or make available replacement cases. I lent my Chungking Express to a friend and he sat on the box destroying it. He will never borrow anything from me again but still need a package for it.

Maybe because I ordered the boxset too and it hasn't even shipped.

Contact them via email using the address found in the first post of this thread. They will probably help you out.

The prevailing suspicion is that if Studio Canal had allowed Criterion to continue with their release, it would have been a MUCH better release than the one Studio Canal flopped on us. We can't say for sure, of course, what Criterion's would have been like, but it wouldn't be hard to imagine that Criterion's picture quality would have been better.

Of course, that could just be Criterion elitism sour grapes, too. :: In any case, the SC is probably the best we'll get for the forseeable future, and is probably worth the $22-odd dollars if you're into the film to begin with.

(Personally, RAN is the the 4th Kurosawa film I've seen... and the one I wish to never see again.)

I guess my disappointment with Wages stemmed from such a high anticipation in seeing it, coupled with expectations it simply wouldn't be able to meet. I do agree that it does an excellent job of creating tension, I just wish the characters were more likeable because at least in my opinion, it would've enhanced the film. Regardless, it's certainly worth seeing.
Yeah my reaction to Wages was similar, it didn't really grab me as much as anticipated. Perhaps because I saw Sorcerer first (on laserdisc no less), which seemed, as I vaguely recall, a bit more of a nail-biter. Wages is due for another watch though so maybe my opinion will change a bit next time.
