Just maybe, some of these buyers will get involved with the Criterion Collection afterwards. Or...it is all for the money
Thats the same thing....getting more folks involved means more money right? I never said making money was a bad thing.

That's a good point, but when the company preaches the best films of all time, it is silly to see a Bay film next to a Godard film in the same collection.

Does Criterion still own the rights to Nights of Cabiria? I'm a bit tight in the pocket and I'm thinking of selling my oop copy. What is the chance that a re-release for this title is happening?

Basically I don't want to be kicking myself in the future..

I just watched For all Mankind. I have to say that considering the amazing mostly unseen footage they had at their hands, they really managed to make a suprisingly boring film. A better director could have made this SO MUCH more fascinating and informative.

I would hold onto it for now, but I think it went OOP because it needed more restoration. I have a feeling it will be re-released but you never know.

I'm curious to how much you're expecting to get from selling off "Nights Of Cabiria" if you're a "bit tight in the pocket"? I'm only asking because I recently acquired a mint Criterion copy from a user in another forum for $20. On the Amazon Marketplace, though, it does seem that the prices are in the beginning stages of getting a bit ridiculous.

However, if you love the movie as much as I do, then no price right now is worth selling it. The only Criterion disc I ever sold was my original copy of "Salo," which was about 5 years ago for like $400. "Nights Of Cabiria," for me, is a whole other ballgame, though. I guess you gotta do whatcha gotta do, though, right?

Yeah that was my reference I've seen it go on ebay for around $20 certainly not worth it in that case.

Just watched my first japanese film ever. you guessed it, kagemusha. Got to hand it to them, I enjoyed it alot. Great story and realism.

What i really loved about it is the camera work. The camera stayed still the whole time and you can see the entire room most of the time. Which the way i think of it is the less cuts you have, the more skilled the actor/tress(s) are, the better the film. More dialog for them to remember you know what i mean.

Thanks for the recomendation, i'll be shooting for third man and seventh seal later.

I also recommend those, but just a warning about Ran, it is amazingly bleak. If you want to stick to Criterion, I would also suggest you try Ozu's Good Morning (it's pretty funny) and Sword of Doom (which also stars Kagemusha's Tatsuya Nakadai and Toshiro Mifune). Sword of Doom is magnificently directed, and it was the first movie I watched on my upconverting dvd player when I first got my hdtv.

Great list but I will say approach Ran with caution, it's very different

I watched Pierrot Le Fou last nite... I still have my 2 Disc dvd set... I just can't bring myself to part with it oddly enough.

I thought the transfer was really good, my friend didn't like the film at all in fact she fell asleep. She couldn't get the tone of Godard films in general though.

and I can't get over how much I love these plastic criterion BD cases. Really classy I can't say it enough.

Have you seen Alfred Hitchcocks "Rope"? It is done in a way that it appears to be shot in all ONE take (no editing at all). Very cool movie.

Started watching Jimi plays Montery last night, unfortunately I fell asleep.

The sound of the DTSHD-MA mix is incredible!! I actually had to turn it down a few times. Can't wait to re-watch and finish it and Otis too later today, maybe even the Complete set tonight.

+1 on Rope. I love Jimmy Stewart's later (read: darker) roles.

did we all just forget about the december criterion releases? i know it seems that we have the kurosawa box coming, but there is still only one movie announced for dvd and blu, i'm not counting a christmas tale since it was moved to december. unless miraculously the kurosawa box is going to be on blu, it seems ridiculous...

Well there were more, but they got pushed back to the beginning of november. For reasons unknown...

Anyone else even tempted by the Kurosawa Box? $319.00 price on Criterion's store, for 25 films, but hardly any extras. I hope there 5 films that were never before available on home video get a separate release. I think I have the other 20.

I have to admit that this box set seems like a very curious idea, especially after we were (unfortunately only) tempted by Ran on Blu-ray. If Criterion has acquired the rights to five more AK films, then why not just release those, either as a set or as individual DVDs/BDs? I can only guess that they are targeting the older consumer that loves Kurosawa but doesn't have the time/(need?) for the extras and does not yet have a Blu-ray player.

I unfortunately can't justify the price when I think of how many more Criterion Blu-rays I could get instead.
