if you know films, then you know that lower budget affairs gets the shaft. could be generational edits, could be lack of care, could be a whole host of variety of factors. but i am not Kurosawa or are you. i think Rialto is the one that knows where a good print is, IF IT DOES EXIST. i'm hoping it does and that print gets brought out and restored.

Ran wouldn't be the FIRST film to suffer PQ-issues as a final master.

but i've seen it a few times on the large screen and it wasn't video... but the film negative itself (a fresh copy) had very blurry optics. and the BD reflects that.

Was it soft? Did it have blurry opticals? Probably, but it sure didn't look like a bad video transfer, by virtue of impossibility.

I bought a Janus Films and Criterion Collection t-shirt off the AV Club years ago. So far no one has said anything about the Criterion collection, mainly beause it's just the cock-eyed C on the front ("Criterion Collection" is in tiny letters on the back, vertical), but a couple of people have acknowledged the Janus Films shirt. They usually say, "Hey, Janus Films" like they recognize it but can't remember from where.

When I wear my Hausu shirt, people think I'm strange...... of course they think that when I'm not wearing the shirt..... Nobody has recognized it for what it is though.... even though it says "House" on the back.... and "A film by Nobuhiko Obayashi"

see? Criterion is a niche market (arthouse films) within a niche market (film lovers).

This isn't about the shirt, but it is kind of related:

At Best Buy, a girl was looking up "House" on our computer for a customer, and me and another co-worker were standing behind her waiting to use the computer next. I asked her what she was looking up, and she said "House." So, knowing she'd have no idea what I was talking about, I said, "...the TV series, or the crazy Japanese movie from the 70's?"

And the other co-worker looked at me and smiled and said, "You've seen that film??" And the rest of our conversation was very Criterion related...

Don't really know many other people who even know what the CC is down south.

How come nobody mentions the great American films, House (1986) and House 2?

Don't forget House IV. They skipped over Part 3.

I have never even seen House 3 and 4. House and House 2 were some of those movies when your a kid you always watch. So since I haven't seen them for a long long time, I never knew about the 3rd and 4th.

In the instance of Ran I heard the usual "If you have the Criterion DVD, don't bother" so I took that into consideration, but ultimately sided with the idea that even if it had DNR and other issues, it would be at least a marginal improvement over the DVD and that alone was worth the $25 to me....

WRONG... The problems outweigh the improved (boosted) contrast etc.... The Criterion DVD isn't better in every way, but the Studio Canal BD is so problematic in so many ways, that as an overall, the Criterion DVD is far more enjoyable to watch.
Well said. I tried this myself and after viewing the SC version I said, "I think I made my first real mistake in purchasing an 'upgrade'..." Disappointing to say the least. But I agree with you Beta, the CC DVD was still more enjoyable to watch and it's rarely a case where the DVD is more enjoyable than a blu. But, ya know?, it says a lot about the quality of Criterion is what I tell myself.

If I recall, Ran was the most expensive Japanese film at that time.
Sorry to bring Spielberg into this thread but to my eye, this is the look of soft optics and 1985-era 35mm negative: https://images.blu-ray.com/reviews/3765_18_1080p.jpg
And this is the look of an old transfer never meant for HD viewing, or even a well-upscaled DVD: https://images.blu-ray.com/reviews/2456_4_1080p.jpg
If any photography enthusiasts out there think that look can be achieved photochemically, I'm willing to listen But IMO Studiocanal completely bungled it.

A similar situation just happened to me, though it wasn't with a girl. I've yet to meet a girl that is educated when it comes to Criterion. One day..

And if you did she would probably be a snobby, insufferable bore when it comes to movies.

Oh, wait...
