Has anyone gotten replacement packaging from Criterion using the directions on the first page of this thread? I ordered one yesterday and was wondering if Criterion sends a message confirming the order or do they even still do it?

I did it just a few weeks ago and had no problem. They sent me an email a couple of days later, after ordering, saying it was shipped. If no email after a couple of days, just let them know and they should be happy to help you.

I ordered a replacement packaging for Chungking Express. Was wondering is the replacement the original packaging or the newer ones Criterion uses?

I did it for The Man Who Fell to Earth and received the newer "plastic" case (which is what I wanted). I believe that is the automatic replacement case, so if you want another 'cardboard' one, you may need to inquire with Criterion...or perhaps someone else on this thread has more info.

When I ordered some replacement cases in the Fall it took them a couple of days to respond, but they were out of the ones I wanted so I had to wait about a month for them to get more in stock. Which wasn't a problem on my end... but it isn't always the quickest of processes.

AT LEAST Clouzot could have had him drive over the "forgotten explosive charge" and blown himself up. I was very disappointed by the current ending.

I did finally watch and enjoyed Les Diaboliques and will purchase it on BD. Even my wife enjoyed it...it was nice seeing Simone Signoret and Paul Meurisse, as I enjoyed them both in Army of Shadows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ran_%28film%29#Production
^it's true it was the most expensive Japanese film $12million, but compared to US, that's a meager budget for an EPIC! top gun was like $14mil. many epics of that time were 20-40+ and not a lot of US epics had cast of thousands of people and horses. so this is a CHEAP budget for an epic of its size.

as for your comparison, two separate films, diff. styles. just no point in comparing that (in spite of film stock). we need to compare apples to apples.

again, i think it's Rialto being lazy and not willing to look for a better print.

Sorry to bring Spielberg into this thread but to my eye, this is the look of soft optics and 1985-era 35mm negative: https://images.blu-ray.com/reviews/3765_18_1080p.jpg
And this is the look of an old transfer never meant for HD viewing, or even a well-upscaled DVD: https://images.blu-ray.com/reviews/2456_4_1080p.jpg
If any photography enthusiasts out there think that look can be achieved photochemically, I'm willing to listen But IMO Studiocanal completely bungled it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_pr...restored_films
^Ran is one of the restored films by MIC. so it has gone through it once already. whether Rialto used it or used an older print or not i dunno. i know they didn't tout it, but they did say it was a newly struck 35mm. which, to me, means that's the only film source they have. it's what they used to copy 35mm for shows around the country and it's what they utilized to ink Blu-Rays/DVDs.

again, unless Rialto/SC get their act together and find a better print, that's all we got. there isn't enough profit-incentive to do so. so i think this is it.

The ordering instructions on the first page of this thread are specifically for plastic replacement cases. If you're after a digipak, you'd probably need to contact Jon Mulvaney and see if they can offer a replacement.[/QUOTE]

Yeah I want the plastic case. If I had that already then I dont think it would have gotten so badly damaged like the digipak did when my friend sat on it.

I disagree.
[Show spoiler]I think it's effective because of the irony of the situation. The thing Mario is most worried about doesn't do him in. What kills him is his own carelessness.

Did Criterion cancel anyone else's order from the sale? I have no idea why they did it to me.

But, ya know?, it says a lot about the quality of Criterion is what I tell myself.
I was pretty underwhelmed with the Criterion DVD. Not sure I would be using it as a example of Criterion quality, though I'm sure they did what they could with it.

I did see Ran when it originally came out. Too long ago to remember exactly what it looked like, but it was pretty typical for its time, my recollection is that it was a decent enough looking film. Not sure either the DVDs or the blu-ray have really done it much justice.

Glad March is a slow month for Criterions, to save money for once, but I love the April and May releases. Is anybody not too psyched with the March releases? I think I'm gonna pick up Au revoir les enfants, and that's probably it.

do we have a list of which criterions are in standard packaging and which use the (not my favorite) cardboard packaging? I just got Sweet Smell of Success and didn't realize they were using cardboard for that release. While, it won't stop me from buying, it would be nice to know what to expect.

My order is still showing as "good" so far..... did they send you an email, or did you just check the status on their site???

The first 9 films they released were digipaks, then they went to plastic cases:

First 9 include:

THE THIRD MAN
THE LAST EMPEROR
THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH
BOTTLE ROCKET
CHUNGKING EXPRESS
THE 400 BLOWS
THE LAST METRO
EL NORTE
LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD

Other releases have been "different" which includes (I may forget some, so sorry)

Cardboard digipaks that have an outer paper case type thing would include :

Night of the Hunter
Breathless
Amarcord
Sweet Smell of Success
Seven Samurai
The Leopard

Thin cardboard individual cases inside bigger boxes (that slide out) for:

The BBS Story
By Brakhage

The Complete Monterey Pop and Yojimbo/Sanjuro (if ordered together) is two plastic cases, inside a cardboard box, as is "Che" (which can only be purchased as a set)

I'm sure I forgot some, so someone can fill in the blanks.

Videodrome is a plastic case inside a cardboard box.

Curious Case Of Benny Buttons comes in a standard "Blue" Blu-ray case (not sure what kind.... it's amazing people can tell the difference) with a regular slipcover.
