I find it pointless to have an individual thread of every release (5+ per month) when people can easily access more content, information and opinions on all the releases by simply visiting Criterions website. This forum has too many threads started by users that just don't do any research. Why add more confusion to the mix? Are the users opinions in this forum more valid than professional reviewers, or Criterions expertise themselves? Usually when people ask questions about a release, several users respond, just like people are responding about Walkabout now. Besides, and Beta will tell you, we tried the individual release threads years ago, and no one responded in them, as they knew this was the content area. Why try it again?

Heh heh....except that is not technically an Australian New Wave movie, being a 1990s film. But I will give you Lightning Jack if I can have Quigley Down Under. Man, I want that movie bad on blu-ray. It, and Blade Runner, were the first DVDs I ever bought. Love that modified Sharps rifle. You can order one too, for about $3500 from the manufacturer, Shiloh Rifle Company of Big Timber, Montana. Unfortunately, I have been spending all my disposable money on Criterions.

Those are some good ones, though I don't understand why Picnic at Hanging Rock get so much love. Based on how many people rave about it I may need to see it again. If you haven't seen it already I strongly recommend Flirting. It's one of my favorite movies and one of the best coming of age stories ever made. Although it stands just fine on its own, Flirting is the sequel to The Year My Voice Broke, so check out that one too if you can find it. (It's been OOP for years so good luck with that.) My Brilliant Career is also a very good story, though I think the book is better than the movie.

+1. What's with all the hate for Stagecoach and BN? I'd watch those over the pretentiousness of Marienbad any day.

Not since it was out in theaters. It's a different sort of Leigh film since it's a period piece. It's good but I don't remember specifics.

Rushmore is actually one of my very favorite movies, full stop. But what do I know? I like Wages of Fear too.

Quigley Down Under is great. I have it on DVD even. Also the soundtrack. And it was directed by the same director as Lightening Jack, which you may or may not have been referring to.

That same director was responsible for one of my favorite guilty pleasures as well: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man!

I see one now for auction on ebay, and the picture showing a "flipper", Criterion DOES NOT make flipper DVD's or blu-rays.

FYI repete and others...Flirting is rentable through NetFlix and The Year My Voice Broke is streamable through NetFlix as well.

These were the first two in a planned trilogy by John Duigan, but I don't know if he ever got around to making the third film.
I didn't mind The Year My Voice Broke, but I loved Flirting! Haven't seen it in over a decade.

I suspect it’s because people are more apt to help those in need. The other individuals are trying to make purchasing decisions with the aid of user advice. You, on the other hand, are going to purchase the film regardless and then let us know repeatedly that you haven’t watched it. I don’t care if you want to buy 12 copies of every title and use the covers to make a collage of your cat. What I don’t understand is why you have to continually post how you own all the titles but have little interest in viewing them. That's my take on it since you asked for a response.

Personally I find John Wayne and early Westerns in general pretty boring. I can't recall any Westerns I really like that were made before Sergio Leone started stirring things up.

And I don't feel Last Year at Marienbad is pretentious at all. To me it's a well-crafted, captivating stream-of-consciousness experience that can mean whatever the heck you want it to.

This is a very good assessment of JediFonger and others that pop in and out from time to time, I believe. Kudos.

Playtime - looks pretty interesting...though I've never seen a Tati
Last Year at Marienbad - ditto...and I did like Hiroshima
Black Narcissus - yep, I'm still on the fence about this one, never seen a P&P
Stagecoach is a typical early western. IMO it's better than She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Fort Apache type westerns of the 50s, but with today's eyes it pales in comparison with Josey Wales, Unforgiven, etc. Playtime is a real treat. I didn't like it at first because I was in a "plot line" frame of mind; I was trying to follow a story. While there is a narrative present, this movie is best enjoyed for the moment. Look at it as a visit to an amusement park and don't watch it if you're sleepy. Once I got my mind right I really had fun watching it. There were a few sequences where I was just grinning like an idiot and I actually giggled on more than one occasion. I haven't watched The Leopard, Black Narcissus or Last Year at Marienbad yet and given some of the assessments here I'm not sure if I ever will.

Woohoo! Good for Netflix. You have no idea what I had to go through to watch TYMVB.

Duigan didn't make the third one. Flirting is a fantastic movie. I too though TYMVB was just so-so but it did provide some interesting, though not necessary, background for Danny's character.

Speaking of Australian movies, I watched Animal Kingdom last night. Thumbs up, 3.5/5 on my scale.

Don't let the hate on this board throw you off. Black Narcissus was great, although the male lead was almost too much of a pompous ass looking type. All the nun characters were great, though, and I thought that there was a decent amount of tension. I also liked the transfer, but then I have a much a smaller HD TV, so it just might have looked better to me. Haven't yet watched The Leopard or Marienbad.
