Agreed. For anyone to buy a box set of 25 films from one filmmaker, they'd have to be a pretty big huge of that filmmaker. But if they're such a big fan, wouldn't they want the extras on the individual releases instead? It seems like an odd choice. An "ultimate" AK boxset seems more logical, with 25 films plus all the existing extras.

yes.... that and the fact that I have so many of the other ones already, and double-dipping a criterion for a criterion without extras is pretty pointless!

Guys, the Kurosawa box is for the non-avid collector. It's primary audience is people with money to burn to look "in the know" who will likely never watch more than 2-3 of the films. It's a coffee table prestige set, just like the Janus set.

Plus, a Kurosawa box set that doesn't include RAN is hardly complete. I know it's not Criterion's fault, and it's a shame, but I'm just saying...

Well, technically speaking, a set that doesn't include Ran, Rhapsody in August, Dreams, Dersu Uzala and The Quiet Duel is not complete, but there's only so much they can do about it.

I'm holding out hope that Kino will release a blu of Dersu Uzala (if they still have the rights). I have the dvd and it is a non-anamorphic mess.

I'm shocked that Warner and MGM haven't licensed Dreams and Rhapsody in August to Criterion though (I'm assuming Criterion has tried). The editions already out are bare bones, and I would like to see feature packed editions (and Richard Gere could do the commentary for Rhapsody!)

Yes, but that is still a ridiculous price, considering I got "The Complete Monterey Festival" set with both "Monterey Pop" and "Jimi Plays Monterey / Shake! Otis At Monterey" for $46.99 at Amazon, ya know?

I'm waiting for B&N to have another 50% off CC sale now that I'm a B&N member. They DID NOT have the "Complete Monterey" set.

I'm not sure how often that's ever happened at Barnes & Noble, but I can't imagine it happening again anytime soon. Maybe someone else that frequents these forums can provide some insight into how often, or not, Barnes & Noble has had such sales.

They don't have them very often, this Criterion sale that they had recently at 50% off was a huge deal. Before that paste several years they always do a sale of Buy 2 Get one Free (Honestly the sale is kinda of like buying the titles thru amazon.com sale prices only you can pick them out in stores)

Of course that us usually retail priced but I have a member card. I do buy a lot from them and usually buy my Criterion BDs there etc because I am so picky about my cases. I usually dig up a coupon here and there and with my discount I usually pay about 30.00 for a 39.99 retail priced release. It isn't cheap but it is ok.

I can't argue about Barnes & Noble too much they are after all one of the few retail outlets you can count on for more obscure titles and Criterion releases.

Word of advice for those who opt to buy them locally at your Barnes stores for release date 2 Weeks before release date go into the store or call them up and talk to someone in that dept .. they are very nice to order in the title and have it held in your name for the release date. I do this for most every release and you don't have to pay for it until you pick it up.

Otherwise sometimes they don't get the title on the release date.

Just an FYI.

The single disc Monterey Pop blu-ray is only $20 at DVDEmpire.com right now, if you are interested.

That must get expensive. I'm relatively OCD about my cases too but I'm not paying $5-$15 + tax more per title to satisfy my sick obsession with perfection. Plus, since Criterion started releasing in the nice and thick clear cases I haven't had a single issue with any of them not being perfect save for ITROTS which had a gash from a razor or knife when it was opened at the Amazon storehouse and repackaged and sent to me. They sent me another copy the very next day which was perfect and I had the standard 30 days to return the gashed copy. In fact, I have noticed that the clear cased CC BDs all look real good in the stores. The people (or machines) who do the package assembly and shrink wrapping seem to do a great job. All of the BnN's in my area have near perfect cased Criterions.

Just got my Pierrot Le Fou and Complete Monterey Pop in the mail..... tearing them open so I can check them out now!

EDIT

Ah man.... I opened it up, and there were two security tags inside..... one on the case in the normal location, and one was stuck to the BOTTOM of the disc for the "Monterey Pop" disc...... I took it off, and there aren't any scratches or residue that I can see...... Wonder how that got there

Probably a DNR advocate trying to get back at one of the grain lovers.

I don't have time to watch Le Fou right now..... and I'm "Tempted" to pop in Monterey to check out some individual songs, but my son is sleeping, so I know I can't do it justice right now.......
