Absolutely not..... If your goal is to expand your exposure to "new" things, I wouldn't put that many eggs in one basket..... (but it is a great set)

i can't think of any great silent westerns.
"Classic", "great" and "good" are words with many definitions, at least one of which would apply to the earliest major film of a particular genre. If the first Western ever made isn't classic then what is? That doesn't mean it's necessarily a good movie, but then hardly any silent movies are really good by today's standards.

Pretty much, get Dillinger is Dead. Screw what you should have (same ol' classics/film school basics), and go with what is just plain awesome. You can fly right past the Snob jrs who are stuck on the Breathless/400 Blows/Seven Samurai/Seventh Seal yawns and jump right into something like Marco Ferreri.

EDIT: In fact I'll email Jon Mulvaney about Jour de fête right now
Home Vision Cinema released the VHS version and it used to be that a lot of that stuff later appeared as Criterion dvds. However, the fact that they never released Jour de Fete and did so many of his others means perhaps not. Let us know if you get an answer.

They did release Jour de fête on laserdisc.

And lou if you've seen The School for Postmen short on the Mon Oncle CC DVD, then you've at least seen a bit of Jour de fête as the whole short is pretty much redone in the feature.

There is nothing yawn-inducing about Jean Seberg. One of the hottest evar. And Seven Samurai is anything but boring. Hell, even my ADD-rattled g/f loved that movie.

The yawn/"boring" comes from the repetitive lists and lovefest of said films. It's like, go and watch more films than just sticking to the script, so to say (not you, it's a figure of speech). Breathless, I put in the same category as the Anna Karina Godards and Contempt. There are far more important films from Godard even from that decade alone, not even counting the decades after. That is where I am coming from. Of course the ones who hasn't seen his other 60's films (Les Carabiniers, Weekend, La Chinoise) will suggest to me Breathless is hot sh*t.

Why are fans of Godard always so... pushy?

Anyway, I ordered The Thin Red Line blu-ray by the Criterion Collection from an Amazon Marketplace seller that said "Fulfillment by Amazon" (for Prime shipping) yesterday for $24.50. Today, I received in the mail the DVD by 20th Century Fox. D'oh, either they're stupid, or they think I'm stupid.

So I called up Amazon, and of course they're going to fix everything nice and clean for me, but the lady said I'd have to reorder the item. I thought "Damn, that was a decent price" and jumped back on Amazon to see what my chances were. How about that, $22.50 from pieceofmindmedia, a specific Marketplace seller I've used many times in the past.

Ho ho, guess I should count my blessings.
Too bad I can't watch it this weekend, but I did receive Days of Heaven and The Red Shoes.

How times have changed.....

Saturdays (1970s - 1980s): Parents sleep in. Kids wake up at 6 am to watch cartoons.

Saturdays (today): Kids sleep in. Parent wakes up at 6 am to watch Criterions.

Does anyone want to buy a used copy of Red Desert. Holy Mother of Christ, I got 30 minutes into that movie and just couldn't do it anymore, and I've finished every Criterion that I've started watching. Unbelievable.

So, after that glowing review....any takers?

Based on your great collection of Criterions, which has a wide variety of films, I'm shocked that you didn't like Red Desert, although you review lacks merit since you didn't finish the film. You own some Criterions that are slower paced and less exciting than that film, imo. I think Red Desert is an exceptional film--I couldn't turn away.

After that review I'm willing to trade my The Third Man for it.

EDIT: Obviously I was kidding.

Already have a copy, or else you'd have a deal!

I don't know, I really do feel like I should try to make it through the whole movie, because I bought it, I owe it to myself to watch it all the way through, but it was a chore. It's not like a Win Wenders or Jim Jarmusch type of slow where it at least feels like something is happening. I'm not sure, I'll give it a shot some other time.

2. Also rentable on NetFlix.

3. PS...Beta might persuade you to consider the AK100 set.

4. EDIT: Just thought of "Night Train to Munich", "Louie Bluie", and "Dillenger is Dead". You're welcome SpiderBaby!

5. BTW...LOVE the von Sternberg set!
1. Right, i forgot about Berlin. I think i'll wait for B&N with that one.

2. Don't have NetFlix overhere.

3. Lol, i almost got it last year. If i have the money during the next B&N sale, i might get it.

4. I want to get Night Train... and Dillinger... but i guess the odds of them getting a Blu-Ray release are small?

5. Can't wait to see them.

Either of the Fassbinder boxes, BRD Trilogy or Berlin Alexanderplatz, should be seriously considered. A substantial number of the Eclipse sets sound appealing to me, they're relatively cheap(er), and not likely to get blu-ray releases.
