i also picked up some Criterion's tonight, albeit DVDs. i'm out of town for work and they had a moviestop here. got Withnail and I, Before the Rain and Wise Blood for $30. they were all used, but looked in incredible shape. They seemed to average their used Criterion's around $15, but Wise Blood was only $4! pretty excited about them.

I watched Sweet Smell of Success last night and Army of Shadows today. Both are quite wonderful.

That's why my Panny is in my bedroom and my Elite is down in my living room. I wanted a shot at the Elite, before they went the way of the dinosaur.

The Panny is still a great plasma TV and my first HDTV.

Yeah, usually, I think. I'm not around the TV right now so I can't confirm. I just know the buzzing went low, and then the camera changed on the film and it went back to being a consistent loud buzzing.
It might be the same thing my old Sony Widescreen did before i got a flatscreen. I think it was the panel that was crapping out. Whenever bright scenes popped up, it started buzzing and then it would stop or buzz very little during other scenes.

If that's the case, then damn, because I just got this thing three or four months ago. Good thing I have that warranty thing.

Not exactly Criterion related, but I would love to see some of his films get the Criterion treatment. For those of you looking for new directors and films to discover may I suggest Andrzej Zulawski. I have currently watched l'important c'est d'aimer (The Important Thing is To Love); l'amour Braque (Limpet Love); and LaFemme Publique (The Public Woman). I have on order Possession and Szamanka (She-Shaman). Currently they are only available on DVD but Mondo Vision has done an outstanding job with them. Some of Zulawski's films can be seen on Netflix so give them a try if you will. Visually stunning and full of energy - I just wanted others to have a chance to experience this director.

I'm almost certain Mondo Vision have the rights to the vast majority (if not all) of them, so you should probably hope to see the "Mondo Vision treatment"--practically Criterion-level, I might add--for most of Zulawski's films. I have the first three LE DVDs released, but I do not yet have Szamanka.

Also, you have excellent taste in avatars, Old Geezer.

Old Geezer.
The three movies I currently have are by Mondo Vision and yes, the quality is outstanding.

Also, you have excellent taste in avatars,

Thank you very much. It's a tough choice between Juliette or Sophie Marceau. I may have to switch back and forth.

I haven't been keeping up with The Simpsons but watched tonight's episode and guess who the guest-voice star was?

[Show spoiler]Werner Herzog

Would love to see some of his films in the collection (Burden of Dreams doesn't really count). He'd relish the opportunity to provide some great extras, too.

One of the last films of his I saw was Encounters at the End of the World, which was quite interesting.

However, the highlight on the disc was Herzog being interviewed by a very obviously smitten Jonathan Demme.
Would love to see Aguirre on blu-ray.

I absolutely love Encounters at the End of the World. Herzog's weird view of nature is so charmingly nihilistic. I think I much prefer his documentaries these days to his scripted movies.

Is Herzog funny on the Simpsons? I haven't watched it is years as I prefer to remember it during its Golden Age. Mind you, after slumming it up in Julian Donkey Boy years back, it is clear Herzog will do just about anything if asked correctly.

Default Criterion Return!

I can't believe I did it, but I accidentally purchased the standard DVD edition of America: Lost and Found! I parted the shrink wrap, but it's still around almost all of the box.
The Criterion return label says shrink-wrap must be intact. I'm going to call them tomorrow and find out if they will perform the exchange. Everything on, and in the box is in mint condition.
Mint.
I will be incredibly disappointed if they deny the exchange. It would be like meeting your favorite director, or actor and they act terribly towards you.

I would be extremely disappointed if I did the same thing and they wouldn't take it. The BBS Story set is easily the best thing in all of my movie collection...maybe right next to the Sergio Leone Anthology

This link posted over at criterionforum.org mentions an upcoming Criterion release of "Brazil," which we can only assume will be for the blu-ray.

So, catching up on some of my purchases this weekend:

Night of the Hunter - thought this was pretty great. Loved the antagonist.

Wages of Fear - Absolutely wonderful

and then:

Head (Finally cracking into the BBS set) - and this...I'm still trying to figure out what the hell I just watched, haha

Other than that: a great Criterion weekend
