SC's version of Ran is really only bad when comparing it to what it would have looked like after a Criterion treatment. For that matter, as a whole package I understand it's not worth the upgrade if you already have the Criterion DVD given the extras. However, if your copy of Ran is the bloody awful non-anamorphic Fox/Lorber DVD then the SC Blu-ray is a significant upgrade. Besides, I really like SC's artwork.

again. all these are false assumptions. unless rialto finds brand new 35mm film prints, Criterion's won't look as well either.

Plus, the negative reports about the Studio Canal are enough to put me off.
However, I'd love to know if Criterion are going to do Throne of Blood. Do they still have the rights?
I liked Ran (you could probably put Rashomon in here too) well enough and can see why they gets all the attention they do but I'd much rather see Throne of Blood as well.

Or Drunken Angel or Stray Dog or High and Low.

I was just looking for a place to vent my frustration at the Yojimbo commentary's insane misguidance in assuming that Sanjuro was in that town as a crooked Ronin to make a profit... and that he was feigning his frustration towards Kohei for being so weak!! Arrrgghh! It's so frustrating to listen to smart people, who know more about movies than I do, as they talk so confidently about how wrong they are.

Something more Criteriony - I'm collecting Kurosawa, Bergman, Visconti, Fellini and Wes Anderson as they trickle through Criterion pipeline.

So naturally my collection comprises of-

Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha, The Seventh Seal, The Magician, Senso, The Leopard, 8 1/2, Amarcord, Bottle Rocket and The Darjeeling Limited. ..well this IS a Blu-ray site isn't it?

If Criterion ever decides to put out Miyazaki, Hideaki Anno or Coppola (Sofia of course).. well then I'll have more BluRays to buy

Blah blah blah. The overall package with a Criterion release would be much better.

While a better film source could make for a better starting point, the real problem is that it's a completely rubbish transfer. Basically it looks like an upscale. Detail is just barely above PAL resolution, and the edge enhancement halos are insane. I'm sure a proper transfer even from the same source would still look vastly superior.

My local record store tends to release their Criterion's a week early so I'm hoping to pick up Au Revoir Enfants this weekend. It'll be a blind buy for me (as most Criterions are)...just by what I've read, I've heard this would be a good choice by my part. What say the CCD masses?

It's an excellent movie. Some Criterion fans may look down on it as a bit too Hollywood--it's not ponderous, morose or self-serious and has good guys, bad guys and a story that moves at a decent clip. Haha, I jest my Criterion loving friends. But seriously, it's a great movie that anyone, even those not fond of many Criterion movies, will love.

It's an exceptional movie. One of the best of the 80s and one of the best childhood movies, period.

They're on Blu-ray.com too. Or can some people not see them?
