It could be that those of you all who went "exploring" are finding new ways to figure out the titles while Criterion does their thing to set up the pages before the announcements are actually made.

Or I could just not know what I'm talking about...

They neglected to mention that they need at least five hours prep time. See ya at six!

Busy month for new releases if so. A pleasant surprise on there for me (567), been wanting to check that out for a while. And then some new to blu also maybe?

Yeah, pre-announcing an announcement is so weak. I mean, like Criterion fans aren't already foaming at the mouth they have to go and do this. It's sadistic and pointless.

Well truthfully, Criterion has proven over and over that they don't care about the people who buy their products so should you really be surprised?

Their astronomical pricing is the biggest way. Don't ever try to convince me that there is a single disc dvd release on this planet that is worth 35 or 40 dollars unless it has a glaring mistake or something on it. I own all their Kurosawa titles an about 6 others that are not his films and I've not bought one of them brand new on release date because I simply refuse to pay what they want. I get them on ebay a few months later or occasionally used on Amazon but I will never pay what they want for new dvd's or blu-ray's.

From what I'm seeing for this month, I would try to get 12 Angry Men if it does happen, but again, it'll be summer before I get it because I will not pay Criterion's pricing nor will I pay them directly. I'll reimburse a private individual for his copy but I refuse to give Criterion money directly

I'm sure if we go through your collection you have posted, there are plenty of titles that are not worth $5 and you probably paid more for them. What is the difference?

So Criterion doesn't care about their customers because of the price of their products? It's pretty clear why the discs cost so much--it's a smaller, niche market. The market dictates the cost. I don't think Criterion dislikes me just because they charge more than I would like to pay. I'm a cheapskate, so I do with Criterion titles what I do with any othe title: wait for the price to drop, a sale or a lucky grab on eBay.

So, for instance..... if a DVD comes out and they spell something wrong on the cover and have to recall it, etc... it makes it worth more? I don't get how mistakes equate to higher value..... We're not talking about collecting cardboard slipcovers here.... many people actually enjoy the films, which may be a crazy concept to the person who is a collector first, and viewer second.

I don't pay MSRP on Criterion titles either.... usually it's 30% off on Amazon

That's funny, I used to pay $100 for Special Edition Laserdiscs, both Criterion AND non-Criterion... and they were worth every penny. There are plenty of films worthy of $30-$40, that's chickenfeed compared to 10 years ago. You can't put a value on any particular film to a TRUE cinema lover.

Criterion is also an independent company not run by a studio with millions of dollars at their disposal, so they sort of need to make money to keep the company alive. And I typically get Criterions on Amazon or through the B&N sales for about 40-50% off anyway... so I don't understand where the gripe is? I guess complaining just to complain is all the rage.

I mean something like it has an extra that they forgot to license. I've seen dvd's get released with bonuses that weren't licensed and then had to be pulled weeks or days later to correct the disc.

I think it was Superman Returns had an issue where a very few copies had lossless audio but the one that was shipped the most had a lossy track. Warner later released a blu-ray with a lossless track but for a time, that particular disc was selling for something like 150 dollars if you could find it. That's what I meant when I said glaring error.

Wow. I'm presuming you're in America because that's the only place people are so spoiled with cheap prices that the Criterions could be seen as so hugely expensive; especially when nobody ever has to pay the rrp anyway.

Criterion put out premium, lovingly crafted editions of movies that are usually far from safe commercial bets. I guess you'd rather they adopted the other studios policies on such films - either not releasing them at all or charging a premium price to dump them, extras-free, on DVD-Rs?

Then you say there's no movie worth $30-$40 unless it's got "a glaring mistake or something on it", which is such a baffling statement that I suddenly don't know what the hell I'm doing even bothering to engage with you.

So it doesn't bother you that people paid $150 for Superman Returns because it had a lossless audio track, but it bothers you that a Criterion title that was done right the first time is $35 ?
