Well I ordered the Contempt blu on the U.S. Amazon link last night with 2-day shipping. It still says delivery date to my house would be Oct. 1st. Won't hold my breath though until it ships and I see the tracking info.

Order from them from time to time, not unusually from their "third party seller" (aka indigostarfish). Never any problem shipping to me (U.S.), except sometimes there is a delay (and sometimes their packaging leaves something to be desired). They just shipped Ran and Katharina Blum my way. Contempt delayed for a bit.

And, in case nobody knows, Belle du Jour is region B only (as is their Marienbad), from what I understand... hope that means Belle will end up on Criterion. The rest are supposedly Region A/B.

Hmmmm, doesn't Criterion still own the U.S. rights? If so, could we look for one next year?

P.S., Godard is the man. That is all.

I have to have the disc in my hands to confirm, but the preliminary info indicates Region-B.

Also, a quick note on the Criterion rights - the studio does not own the rights to the film for the U.S. They licensed them for their SDVD release. Nevertheless, it would be great if they could do a Blu-ray release.

In any event, you should hear more about the upcoming UK/FR/DE releases soon.

OK, let me clarify:

1. The old SDVD release of Breathless was by Wellspring. Very disappointing.

2. A couple of years after the Wellspring disc went OOP, Criterion licensed the rights and released a notably better SDVD.

3. Currently there are no plans for a US BD release of the film by Criterion.

4. Criterion do not release in Region-B.

Default The Burmese Harp

Just watched the Criterion DVD of The Burmese Harp, which I had seen many years ago on VHS. It's not on Criterion's blu ray list but I'm going to try to hold out for a while for the bd (I watched a rental copy) as I'm trying to avoid double-dipping these days. This movie has some scenes that just rip your heart out -a very touching film.

No problem. Chris over at criterionforum.org is good about doing us the service, so I like spreading the good word when I should be doing other things.

When Criterion released 'Last Year In Marienbad' on Blu-ray, there was quite a lot of criticism about the packaging, specifically the tightness of the outer slip cover, the thickness of the enclosed booklet which produced a bulging effect and the fact that the outer slip cover has white printing on a white background.

That was in addition to the more general moans from people who don't like the digibook style of packaging anyway.

I was just wondering whether, in view of this, Criterion have any intention of re-releasing Marienbad in a Blu-ray case. Does anyone know?

Well, I think I'm safe in saying that no one on these boards has the 'insider info' as to when, or which movies exactly, Criteron will issue the earlier releases in their clear plastic cases.

However, with "Last Year At Marienbad" the cardboard slipcover issues were corrected after the 1st run. And for anyone that did receive the tighter slipcovers, myself included, Criterion was more than happy to send out replacement slipcovers if you contacted them.

Also, I think the re-releasing of "Last Year At Marienbad" in a clear case is a tougher call than the others because it has a bit of artistic integrity attached to it with the embossing on the cover.

This might sound like a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway.

Are the extra features on Criterion blu-ray's always in hi-def too? I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting Monsoon Wedding pretty much for the extras, although of course I'll watch the film again.

Hello Tom,

First of all, welcome to the community

Second, yes, they are mostly in 1080i (and 1080p whenever possible).

1080i/1080p as pro-b said but most of them are just upscales.
