My most wanted new spines would be:

The umbrellas of Cherbourg (Jacques Demy)
Persona (Bergman)
The seven year itch (Billy Wilder)
Scarlet Street (Fritz Lang - Kino owns the DVD, but one can wish...)

The catalogue titles I would want the most:

Beauty and the Beast (Jean Cocteau)
Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder)
Children of Paradise (Marcel Carné)
Pocket Money (Truffaut)
Fanny & Alexander (Bergman)
Brief encounter (David Lean)
Nights of Cabiria (Fellini)

Any Billy Wilder and Truffaut would be nice additions, IMHO.

And I guess they could throw in a musical in their catalogue, for a change...

Amelie
Big Night
City Lights (The Kid, The Circus, The Gold Rush, Chaplin shorts, etc.)
City of God
The Day of the Jackal
Gallipoli
The Killing Fields
Matewan

Matewan has been my pet suggestion that I've been bugging Criterion about for years. It's a perfect fit--independent production with John Sayles directing and a great cast--Chris Cooper, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell Bonny Prince Billy and James Earl Jones. Oh and it's a pretty good movie too. It's going for close to $40 on Amazon. That's for a dingy non-anamorphic 4:3 DVD. *shudder*

I'd love As far as upgrades go, I'd say 100% of the DVDs I own--Time Bandits and spine #1.

-don't list anything that's been announced or confirmed
-please refrain from listing titles that don't have a chance (ie The Dark Knight or There Will Be Blood).

After I have enough responses then I'll compile a 10-Most wanted Blu-rays from posters in this thread. Hey, I think Criterion reads this forum!

NEW SPINES:

The Werckmeister Harmonies (tell me this isn't a perfect fit for Criterion)
The Return
Room in Rome
The Killing Fields
12 Angry Men
Judgment at Nuremberg
Sin Nombre
Badlands

CATALOGUE:

The Burmese Harp
Le Samourai

I would like to see the 1974 version of "The Taking of Pelham 123"

Plus another vote for Amelie (I bought the Canadian version from amazon.ca)

New:
Nostalghia (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Badlands (Terrence Malick)
Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni)
Love Streams (John Cassavetes)
The Man Who Sleeps (Bernard Queysanne)

Upgrades:
Andrei Rublev (Andrei Tarkovsky)
La Jetee/Sans Soleil (Chris Marker - so I won't be so hesitant to buy the DVD copy! easily my favorite things to watch in the collection besides By Brakhage)
John Cassavetes box set
In The Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai)
George Washington (David Gordon Green)

Some of these are likely, they are working on Andrei Rublev for sure, and there is a rights issue they are working on with Love Streams. I wouldn't be surprised to see Badlands and Blow-Up come out of the Warner deal from a few years back.

Raise the Red Lantern
In the Mood for Love
Eyes Without a Face
Beauty and the Beast
Viridiana
Love Exposure (Shion Sono)
City Lights
Three Colors Trilogy (Blue, White, Red)

I would add Tristana from Bunuel but I haven't seen that one. Apparently all the DVD versions are poor.

YES. I've been hoping for a Criterion version of this forever, and forgot to put it on my list. Great call.

Not sure if someone posted it already, but Criterion confirmed that they are releasing the Todd Solondz film Life During Wartime today.

While they're at it, they could release Happiness as well, which is, IMO, a superior film.

By the way, I just rememebered another that could be a nice addition to the list: Lars von Trier's Dogville.

Thanks! I'd be willing to bet that less than 5 people on this site have actually seen it (or any Bela Tarr film, for that matter). I'm not sure exactly what "seems to fit perfectly with Criterion" means, since Criterion is merely the company releasing the films, but I just think its importance and artistic value are the epitome of what Criterion tends to release. If they release that, I think maybe down the line we'd see Satantango, his 9 hour film that has become the thing of legend on festival circuits during the 90s and sometimes 2000s.

Upgrades:

The Vanishing
Brazil
John Cassavetes Box Set (I'll count that as one)
Spartacus
Die Blechtrommel (both the original cut, and the new director's cut)

New titles:

Paul Verhoeven's Dutch movies (all of them, but Soldier of Orange and Turkish Delight would be best)
Alex van Warmerdam's movies
Character
Qatsi Trilogy
Any of David Lynch's movies.

Don't know that I'll bother with putting a list together, but if I do Sayles is right at the top. I've never seen Matewan, so my pick would probably be Lone Star.

I like you for this, but I don't think Criterion will be the one releasing it. I would like it though.
