It looks like Don't Look Now is getting a British release:

https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6030

Hopefully Criterion might still release this film (I was going to put it on my list of ten new titles/upgrades)...and if not, hopefully someone will release it here in an edition worthy of the film.

Okay, here is a quickly cobbled together list...

New Titles:
Don't Look Now
The Sweet Hereafter
something by Herschell Gordon Lewis, perhaps the Blood Trilogy
Shoah
His Girl Friday (probably unlikely, but one of my favorites)

Upgrades:
Written on the Wind
Rushmore
The Ice Storm
Passion of Joan of Arc
Dazed and Confused
Bicycle Thieves

I could go on, but that will probably work for now.

Cool! Yet another "silent" that I know absolutely nothing about! I'm intrigued yet again.

Thanks for sharing Bud!

From what I can see...a lot of his earlier films were released by Kino and "The White Ribbon" was released by Sony. Maybe securing the rights is a hassle?

The Dutch releases only featured a trailer, while the American DVDs all had an audio commentary. They couldn't even release their own classics properly on DVD, so I have no faith at all in a Dutch Blu-ray release, if that ever comes.

I think Pyoko knows that...he is not happy with the transfer that Criterion did for blu. The BFI version of the film supposedly has a better transfer. Either he doesn't own a region free player and/or he is a purist and really wants Criterion to do a "proper" transfer.

Like it or not...I'm satisfied with the CC blu transfer.

Le Cercle Rouge review is up.

Looks better than the StudioCanal version in my opinion. I realise it's supposed to be drab and dull, but the blue/green cast on the SC version is just ugly and doesn't look like the right kind of dull. Also the Criterion has a bit less contrast boosting and thus looks less harsh. I'll be keeping my pre-order.

Can I participate or am I too much of an outsider?

I would be very happy in 2011 if I were to get these

Alexander Nevsky
Ivan The Terrible Part 1 & 2
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Tokyo Story
City Lights
Les Vacances De Monsieur Hulot
In The Mood For Love

If I could get these I would be very happy, I know it's not 10 but I do not really buy all of the Criterion releases like most of you do. I mostly buy the one's I really really want and rent the rest that I am curious to watch

You're Canadian, right? I think that qualifies as immediate disqualification.

I think it's a damn shame that Coppola has such a strangle-hold on the US rights to Napoleon so that we'll never see the longer version put together by Kevin Brownlow. Maybe someday they'll release it in Europe and I can import it ...

Did anyone catch Bonjour Tristesse (Otto Preminger, 1958) on TCM last night? It would make for an excellent Criterion release. I looked on Amazon and even the people on Marketplace are selling the DVD for like $70. It's a great film and happens to be another one I watched over the Summer, but forgot the name. I really need to start writing the foreign film titles down. I really like the way the movie switches between black & white and color, to separate events from the past and the present. And don't even get me started on Jean Seberg. Something about that short hair...

It's mostly for fun, I know it's a Criterion thread and it's serious stuff but it's good to have fun sometimes
