Mono is not an artistic decision so much as a technological limitation, so I'm not sure what you mean by "intended" here. Personally, I have my AVR send a mono soundtrack to all channels so I can hear it better.

As for your last sentence, who's "we?" And, assuming arguendo that you're referring to me, when have I ever given the film a "rating?" That's right, I didn't. The implication from my statements, which may or may not be over your head, is that the very little production that Malick has had and the quality he's produced almost universally among critics in his first three pictures warrants a degree of optimism (something you consistently have shown you lack) that his latest will be of a high quality. |

That's a very fair point, but there's a major difference between the two. Lucas is considered very influential to cinema, but no one ever said he was a great director or writer in an artistic sense. Malick is nowhere near as well-known to the general public, but he's always been critically lauded for his directing and writing. But you make a fair point that a director's past certainly doesn't always translate to credibility, nor does it guarantee quality in upcoming films, but I think it's a case-by-case basis. At the end of the day, it's impossible to judge a film before it's released, but there's nothing wrong with looking forward to it and thinking it may continue along a trend of quality.

The same audio comes from all channels so it doesn't confuse the brain at all. More like a drive in movie than being in a theater I guess.

Or like being in a theater. It's obviously been a while but I kind of remember side speakers even in the early seventies. Which only makes sense, the alternative would be blasting the front speakers so people in back could hear.

I tried looking through the last few pages in this thread and couldn't find an answer so I apologise in advance if this questions treads over familiar water but I was wondering why the preorder price of The Makioka Sisters on Amazon is considerably lower then all the other forthcoming CC releases at $20.99?

I like my old movies to play from my center channel, they way they were recorded. I don't personally like to hear the same sound from every speaker, as the sound is just not as pleasing to my ears. Now, you can do what you want, and I am not claiming to write the gospel on how audio should be sent through your speakers, but it is unfair for you to say that what the filmmakers intended, or what the technology dictated at the time, should be changed now because "it can be." Woody Allen uses mono or front channels only in his movies, and his last film was either this year or last year. Heck, some movies in the CC were made in the times of surround sound, yet only have a monaural or stereo soundtrack because that is how they were recorded...for whatever reason. To each his own I guess... Last edited by italy12; 03-21-2011 at 11:41 PM. |

That's cool man, do what you want. I didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. All I was saying is that when something is in mono there aren't separate channels so it doesn't matter if you play it from just one speaker, two speakers or all speakers. No audio was mixed for effect like it is with 5.1 or even stereo. Personally, if I were making a movie based mainly on dialog I wouldn't use surround sound or even stereo because recording in mono is so much easier in the production stage.

regarding director's choice for mono audio. it's really interesting because most directors upto around 1980s or 1990s basically delivered mono tracks, even w/the advent of 'stereophonic sound' or surround sound. some experimented, but by & large, it remains 'mono'. 1990s through present time is when audio really took a turn for krazy development in not just surround sound but higher fidelity tracks.
aaanyways, i figured out my LPCM issues. i have a Sony S-360, when i use bitstream mode, it will pass LPCM 1.0 as stereo LPCM. i have no idea why, i've tested all the Criterion BDs w/mono streams and it's just that way. if i use the LPCM mode (so that secondary/pip audio can be played back for BDs that use it as a bonus feature) then and only then will LCPM 1.0 be used as center. it's strange cause you'll see 3 ch. lit up, L-C-R. outside of S-360, i also have a Panasonic BD35 and BD60 and both of them pass the proper LPCM mono (in the form of 5.1, but only center ch. has audio) when i select bitstream mode. that's why i'm not used to Sony's choice to do this. when i used Panasonic it was fairly straightforward. i hate how this part of BD Spec just seems so 'unfinalized'. a consumer would have to know about LPCM vs. bitstream in order to play 2nd audio vs. seeing that DTS-HD MA/TrueHD logo lit up. they should've made this more streamlined in the spec. stage. |

OK, I don't care, this is more important:
I don't know how late I am with pop culture crap for my age, but I just heard about this crap on T.V.. At first I thought it was a joke. A myth. So I had to look for myself. This song is a f'n masterpiece that overtakes Justin Bieber as the best songwriting I have heard this year: Autotune at it's best (And why is there a grown a** man in the video rapping about a school bus?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0 "Yesterday was Thursday! Thursday! Today, it is Friday! Friday! We, We, We, so Excited! We so Excited! We gonna have a ball Today! Tomorrow is Saturday, And Sunday, comes Afterwardsssssss!" "FUN FUN FUN FUN!" 'The Woman in the Window' came out on a very nice disc from MGM, and may still be available - much better then the crap public domain versions. Another Lang I'd recommend to you is 'The House by the River'. It too came out from Kino but apparently has some issues. I picked up the French PAL version which looks stellar. |
