I watched a bit of my (now OOP) La Belle Noiseuse DVD the other day and I would like to see some Rivette from Criterion. Seems like La Belle Noiseuse would be right up their alley, or maybe Celine and Julie Go Boating, which hasn't been released on DVD in the US.

As others have mentioned...I think "love" of this film is a personal thing. I really liked it (I streamed it on NetFlix before purchasing the CC blu) and it might have to do with my understanding of German and the use of visuals and character development.

I will also revisit this in the near future.

Thanks a lot for the info on "Antares". It's streamable and I've added it to my Instant Queue.

The visuals in this film alone are worth the recommendation to check it out, but I personally love it. One of my favorite Criterions.

Agreed. Either way, it's a tremendous film.

Does he at least get bonus points if he actually watches it

I thought it was a good film.... remove the proprietary case and normal artwork, and all of a sudden it's a bad film..... sheesh.

I've been asking for La Belle Noiseuse for years... a set with both versions would be sweet.

Ah, the Criterion elitists. These are probably the same people who reminisce about enjoying a band "before they were cool".

Possible, the dialog seems so plain subtitles wise

The cineamtography in this film is great and the two leads are good but those are the only high points of the film for me as of now.

If he's even taken the plastic off he's grabbed the lead.

Default A Criterion Blu-Ray retails for $29.99?

I'm pretty sure someone has covered this in the 1400 pages prior to this one but is this real? An error? Only because of the Tsunami (The Makioka Sisters is a Japanse film)? The shape of things to come?

Can anyone comment on the quality of Criterion's cases? Are they all white?

Yes, it's been covered. The lower MSRP price for "The Makioka Sisters" is because, other than the trailer, there are no supplements on the disc. It's currently has a pre-order price of $19.99 on Amazon.

Criterion's custom-made Scanavo blu-ray cases are clear, similar to a PS3 game case. Not all of Criterion's packaging is universal, though. Similar to their DVD releases, some films come in cardboard packaging and some in the plastic cases.

Some examples...
Sweet Smell of Success
Topsy-Turvy

Criterionforum.org is a good place to see the packaging.

Does anyone know if Criterion still accepts the Paypal method of payment for replacement cases. $10 (with shipping) on the site is a lot for one case.

I was wondering that, too. You should try and see what happens. haha. Worse case they refund you the money... best case you get the cases.
