I just received my copy of 'Pierrot le Fou' in the mail. Really can't wait to pop that one in! I've never seen it before and am really excited. That's pretty much how it's been with every criterion blu I've bought, save for Bottle Rocket and Benjamin Button.

I also purchased 'Ran' at the used video store yesterday. Does anyone know what the deal is on the BD release?

There is no BD release, at least not by Criterion. They lost the rights for now. A supposedly sub-par version just came out in the UK.

You mean to tell me that right after it was announce by Criterion several months ago, it was just yanked right out from underneath them!? That sucks! I mean I know that there was nothing official with Criterion, no release date or anything, but it was still announced.

Whew! Contrast anyone?! I think I'll just stick to my DVD copy until Criterion gets the rights to distribute back. Does anyone know where to find a review for 'The Deer Hunter' BD from the same distributor?

Yep. It is a UK release for now but is supposed to have a US release next year. But the transfer is apparently lacking. It is region A-B though, if you want to import it.

The review sounded really good.... "Grain in tact" and "sharp as a pin" but then I looked at the "Images" tab, and It looks pretty soft to me....... is there a site with more screen caps for this???? I may just wait for a US release for this one.... but I love this film.

As a huge Korsawa fan I am most interested in the eventual Blu releases of "The Seven Samurai", "Ikiru" and "Rashomon". Criteria will still have the rights to those , no??

Yeah, I'm curious about Elephant Man. Ordered it but haven't received it yet. I've read its good but somewhat soft as well.

I think Lionsgate releasing Ran in the US in 2010 pretty much rules out any chance of Criterion resolving their rights issues anytime soon. Same for Contempt. Oh well.

I agree, it's a shame that the DTS HD 5.1 track got stretched like that.

Well I think the DVD edition is still pretty easy to find, but I'm sure you meant all of your Blu-ray Kurosawa's to be Criterions.

It sucks that Ran may not find it's way onto Criterion Blu in the foreseeable future, I really enjoied the DVD edition, and was looking for to the Blu upgrade.

Yea that's what I meant to say. Not only does it suck for us but criterion as well. That was and has been a huge seller for them over the past 4-5 years. And surely Lionsgate or whoever is doing the American transfer to blu won't be able to use all of the special features like Criterion does. I've always viewed this title's home as Criterion.

How do you guys shelve your Criterion Blu-rays and DVDs? Currently, I have all of my Criterion discs (both BDs and DVDs) in alpha order and separate from the rest of my movies. It looks a little odd to have DVD cases mixed in with BD cases, but it doesn't look too bad. It did pain me a little to shelve the Contempt BD (UK import) in the "regular" BD section and not in the Criterion section. How many people have enough Criterion titles to have a Criterion section? The recent B&N sale sure increased my library.

I'm not a purist. I've lived through too many technological permutations at this point. I separate things into a few categories: Drama/Comedy, SF/Horror, Fantasy/Mythology, Documentary, Superheroes, Other Animation (humorous, children's, Looney Tunes, etc.). In my categories, all media types are side by side: videocassette, DVD, HD DVD, BD. The only things I shelve separately are my laserdiscs, which are a select collection and need shelving over 30 cm to house.

Yea, if they don't release both together at a good price ($35?) I'll probably pass on the purchase and just sent them.

I put them with all the other BDs because I don't buy them for the Criterion logo but for the movies.
