Yes, even for US customers, Criteron is now charging their standard shipping rates since the replacement cases are ordered through their online shop. So, anything under $50 has a minimum shipping charge of $5.95 in the USA. A single case will now cost a US customer $10.95 ($5 case + $5.95 shipping). Ridiculous, I know, but that's how it seems to be now.

I find it funny now when looking back on all the belly-aching that came up when Criterion was selling the replacement cases solely through PayPal. So many people thought it was too much money to spend $5 on the first two cases and then $2.50 for each subsequent case in the same order. Plus, there was FREE shipping included in the price. Now, look at the pricing... $5 across the board PLUS shipping charges.

Well if it's only $6 it's not bad. Last time I check on one of their sales on their site I pick 4 movies which were at good prices compare to Amazon.ca but then charge me something like $45 of shipping which made the deal just not worth it anymore as I was saving $2 over what I would pay at Amazon.ca. With $6 I can live with that, it's almost like buying a new DVD but my package of The Last Emperor was a bit beat up when I got it and over time been thinking of just going ahead and replace it with the clear case. I wil lgo and check what happen if I order it and see if they will only charge me the $6. Thanks

I just recently bought two of the cases for someone over in Scotland since Criterion doesn't ship internationally. The total cost, including me repackaging the cases in a better box and shipping charges, was $25. Someone might be able to do the same for you if the shipping charges to Canada are too ridiculous. Still, though, even if you got someone in the US to ship the case to you, the price would be $10.95 for one case plus whatever the cost of shipping to Canada would be. Surely, it'd be under $20... but, that's quite a bit of money for one plastic case.

Yeah! I am usually not that nuts over the packaging but it's sort of beat up and I am just worried over time will just fall apart. Now if I had skills I would just make my own cover and just move it into a regular case but I have about as much talent at doing that as a chimpmunk sending a rocket to the moon In fact the chimpmunk might achieve it before me

I watched The Secret of the Grain last night. I might need to sit on it a bit longer, but as of right now, I was fairly underwhelmed. It wasn't a bad movie by any means, but I don't feel the need to ever see it again. Reminds me of Summer Hours in that way.

I watched that film not really knowing what to expect. When it was over, I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it. Same went for A Christmas Tale. I'll tell ya, some of those "talky" IFC films were some of the best!

The Secret of the Grain and Summer Hours are among my favorite Criterion Blu-rays. Like italy12, I didn't know what to expect going in and was very surprised by how much I enjoyed them. (Same with Everlasting Moments.) I found them both to be infinitely better than Close-Up or Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and considerably better than Paris, Texas and Army of Shadows. It's interesting how taste varies from person to person.

Speaking of nostalgia, how about Gloria (1980)? That movie has a very DePalma feel to it.

Funny you brought up Army of Shadows. That was one I could not wait for based on word-of-mouth recommendations on this forum, and I think it is probably one of my favorite movies of the CC BD collection. Close-Up was quite brilliant as well. MCML was just eh, although I could probably see myself appreciating it more over time.

I really wanted to like Army of Shadows. The French Resistance is such an interesting subject and just ripe for a great story. Between my enthusiasm and the hype surrounding it perhaps my expectations were unrealistically high; I thought the movie was disappointing and not at all entertaining. Maybe Melville and I just aren't compatible, because I think Le cercle rouge and Le samourai failed to deliver on their potential. Don't get me wrong, I like them, but they could have been so much better.

I was underwhelmed with Merry Christmas as well, but found Everlasting Moments to be a masterpiece. That's crazy that you think Summer Hours is a better film than Paris, Texas. CRAZY.

Paris, Texas just never took off for me. It moved slowly and I never really cared about any of the characters. Summer Hours isn't chock full of action either, but the characters were so believable and the tone is so lighthearted and whimsical--like summer hours--that I didn't care what happened. I was just happy to be along for the ride. It's not what I'd call a deep or profound movie and it does seem to be outside what Criterion normally releases, but I'm glad they did.

wow, Brazil is FINALLY coming out on blu-ray on July 12th BUT it's coming from Universal first NOT Criterion.
unbelievable.
I have been thinking about Brazil coming to blu-ray for 4 years, but I never even considered that Universal would issue it first.
I'm so bummed even though I'm glad it is finally being released.

I think both are excellent films, but in different ways. Paris, Texas is an incredible film because of the affecting performance of Stanton, and the well-known monologue, which is one of the best written and directed scenes in movies, in my opinion.

Summer Hours I loved, because of its simple but realistic take on a family dealing with loss and how we look at material items in the wake of such a loss. Originally commissioned by the Musee D'Orsay, I find the film to be one that is easy to relate to.

I've said for awhile now that Everlasting Moments may be the most criminally overlooked Criterion on blu, although it's obviously just my opinion. I love that film.

I have to respectfully disagree. Army of Shadows, to me, was fascinating. It wasn't what I'd call an entertaining film, but I couldn't look away because of the tension that was created. Le Samourai was much the same way for me.

I prefer Stanton in Repo Man. It was on TCM last week. I know I'm old when a movie from my adolescence is on Turner Classic Movies.
