My gripe is releasing something that's already been released without significantly improving upon the existing edition and then charging $30 for it (and anything less than a new transfer is not significant.) Maybe they should stop wasting plastic on releases that aren't even close to utilizing the full potential of Blu-ray, especially when it's already been done once.

But then I don't put any value at all in extras. Maybe there's something there that alone makes it a worthwhile release for people.

The video looks disappointing, but Criterion's major limitation is they need to work with what they're given. Still, it looks less processed than Universal's release.

Unfortunately, this doesn't look too good for Spartacus and Brazil.

Fear and Loathing is a great (misunderstood) film. The screenshots look great, and the review says it is improved from the Universal release. There are a lot of very nice Criterion extras as well. So, if someone is a fan of this film, then I see absolutely no reason to complain about this release.

I've wanted this on Blu, but held off on the decent looking Universal release because I love the extras on my Criterion.

When this was announced I expected a transfer at least the level of Universal, and all the Criterion extras. This has it all, so I shall be buying

What did people expect?

You can go to their site, and send them an email. I think it's in their FAQs

As far as Fear And Loathing is concerned..... I am always willing to pay for 'marginal' improvement... and it looks like the Audio really shines on this, so I'm excited for that..... I didn't buy the first release, so that makes my decision a lot easier.

since i've seen fear and loathing (shocker i know), i believe original print already had a lot of 'filtered lens' look. it can look processed... but director's intent was to make the whole 'trip' druggy. obviously he succeeded. pretty sure the film negative is fairly in line w/original film debut. do we really expect 4k/8k super duper transfers every single film nowadays? that to me is totally unrealistic given that universal/criterion are for profit biz FIRST, not film preservationist first.

anyways... i don't see what the dealeo w/the film negative is, but universal's BD transfer/encoding process leaves a LOT to be desired. i imagine a monkey randomly banging on the studio panels and their engineers doing a lot of 'auto' transferring w/the DI. they just don't pay enough attention to detail that Criterion would. it's why i've held off on many Universal catalogue (SPartacus, i'm looking at you) until a proper one is released.

no, but for a fairly popular and recent film that was already released in HD twice, i don't think that's unreasonable...

i've seen this movie on both HD formats and i can't see much of a difference.

Same mediocre source as the Universal release with only perhaps some extremely minor tweaks. What a waste of a release in my opinion.
Quick clarification: The same master, not the same transfer.

What's your "Hopper" request?

PS Here's a thought, we could put as our avatars films that we'd like Criterion to do....

I'd need to change mine though. Although Man 2 would look great on blu (VistaVision!), it's owned by Universal, and they seem too greedy and too dim to let something like that happen. But maybe I'm wrong. Has Universal ever let Criterion do one of their films?

Now Rebecca, which is another favorite of mine is, I think, owned by MGM. Criterion did a release of it several years ago on DVD, and so maybe it could happen again on blu-ray.

Fear and Loathing will be a definite pick up for me. Glad I didn't pick up the Universal release when it first came out.

I'm no big fan of the film fwiw, but the review reads to me like you should see a difference with the Criterion version. How big a difference will depend on your equipment and how it's set up and how much of a difference there actually ends up being in reality. Sounds like it will be better than either of the ones you've seen. Whether worth the bother, hard to say. I'm curious to see how the dvdbeaver comparisons turn out.

(And yeah, I sure hope if/when Criterion gets a shot at Spartacus that the master they end up with to start from is worth the bother, i.e., they are able to make a substantial improvement over the current blu-ray travesty.)

Back in college it was more or less a movie I watched when drunk and/or stoned. I think that's how most casual viewers view the film. Since then I've grown to respect it more as a true film.
