If that is real (don't have a newsletter yet) it's obvious that it's the movie I wanted that Criterion slapped on HULU, The Phantom Carriage.

That would be great! The older Tartan UK release with Bergman's The Image Makers is too high-priced these days. Although, just for The Phantom Carriage, the current Tartan UK disc is fairly cheap.

Does anyone here happen to know what movies Criterion holds the home video release rights to or how to find out. I would love to see "The Naked Lunch" on Blu-ray and I think they'd be the company to do a proper release of this little cult classic.

So, i guess that's not an issue in terms of releasing it in high definition (unless they lost the rights etc) |

Hey gang,
I just finished watching Nights of Cabiria, literally just a few minutes ago. Going in to this movie, I had no idea of what to expect. I like to know as little as possible about a movie before I watch it. Especially with the Criterion releases I am buying. I try to have no prejudices or pre-conceived notions as I sit down to watch for the first time. Anyway...When she went with the famous actor, I thought it was going to be a "Pretty Woman" tale. I was glad that it was not. As the movie progressed, I realized that Cabiria was a lonely woman who was desperately searching for true love. Oddly enough, I found her to be funny, (her dancing in the night club and the bit where she comes through the curtain could have been out of a classic episode of "I Love Lucy") naive, and quite cute, all at the same time. ![]() ![]() When she finally meets Oscar, you are happy for her. You share her excitement when she tells her friends they are getting married, you want to see her find love, and happiness. Sadly, she does not, and when they were in the woods at the end, I began to suspect something was wrong right after she asked Oscar to kiss her...honestly, I thought he was going to kill her and the credits would roll. However, the story took a different turn. Oscar was no murderer, he merely wanted to rob her...BUT, what I cannot figure out is this: If he had enough money to go on dates with her and always pay for everything, why would he suddenly need her money? She mentions at the dinner how he never asked her for money, or even if she had any. How would he know to rob her? What would make him believe this crime would lead to profit? Especially after paying for several dates. It is implied that they never had sex, nor even kissed until after they were married. Also, if robbing her was his intention the whole time, why did he ask her to marry him? That didn't make much sense to me...perhaps I am missing something. ![]() I watched the original language version with English subtitles...perhaps I will re-visit this with the English dubbed track. Maybe that will help answer some of these questions. Needless to say, I liked this movie, and while typing this I am thinking about it and that makes me want to watch it again to see what I may have missed. I would give Nights of Cabiria a solid 3/4 stars, with an extra nod going to Giulietta Masina for portraying Cabiria as a character that is human, and with character traits that make her endearing and someone you want to spend your time getting to know. I know that I will definitely be giving this film additional viewings to allow my self further time to study this character, along with Oscar, to gain a better understanding of Fellini's intentions. ![]() Thanks for reading. ![]() -Dave |

I don't know...I think it would be cool for just any CC app to appear. Personal virtual library of CC movies, artwork gallery, special features listings, essays on the go for those who don't carry their booklets with them, a CC cover collection/gallery (featuring old artwork on titles where artwork has been updated (i.e. B&tB, High and Low, Red Shoes, etc.))...stuff like that. I know Apple is more popular, however, the Android marketplace, from what I hear, is growing fast. Which phone do you own? Last edited by italy12; 04-20-2011 at 12:48 PM. |

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but has anyone seen the trailer for Lars von Trier's new film, Melancholia? It looks pretty interesting, and I like most of the cast a lot. It's good to see Kiefer Sutherland back in movies and not screaming for 60 minutes every week on 24 (even though I loved that show)!
Some say (on imdb's forum) that it may be part of a series, much like his other films are connected, with Antichrist. The title cards are very similar, and could be just the same artist or design template, but I don't know too much about LvT to predict anything about his films. Edit: also weird that the release dates on imdb don't list any dates for North America. I only find that odd because the movie features mostly North American actors, i.e. Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, etc. Antichrist was released in theatres here, correct? As far as the essays on-the-go... they're pretty much all available on Criterion's site for reading under each specific title. So, if someone have a smartphone I'm pretty sure they're gonna have access to the internet on their phone and reading the essays through your phone's browser wouldn't be any different than reading the essays through some kind of phone application. As far as a CC cover collection/gallery (featuring old artwork on titles where artwork has been updated... Criterion doesn't even do that on their own main website, so what would compel them to do this for a phone application? This is something that a really devoted Criterion nerd/phone nerd would have to create and share with others because I could never see it coming directly from Criterion. HTC EVO. The Android OS is a powerhouse because it's all Google created. |
