Personally, I wish they would get the rights to Raise the Red Lantern by Zhang Yimou. That should look great on Blu if done correctly.
I have just ordered the UK BFI version of this.

The one has nothing to do with the other, unfortunately. Criterion have already released a Kurosawa title on Blu-ray, and at this point, there is absolutely no need to rush with the Seven Samurai.

As I said, earlier, there are a lot more important directors that they need to concentrate on, particularly given the fact that many of them have not yet received HD treatment worldwide. And I am unsure if you are aware or not, but Criterion is a label whose output is followed worldwide, so how ecelectic their catalog is, is of utmost importance.

I wish they would properly handle Kieslowski's "Decalogue." Or Rivette's "La Belle Noiseuse."

There sure is if they are losing rights to his films and Seven is right up there with The Seventh Seal and 400 Blows as one of the most important films in the entire Criterion collection.

But, though i love it, the Decalogue was filmed for television and won't look that gorgeous in hd. I prefer instead that they release The Double Life of Veronique first (a title that they already have on dvd).

Any Antonioni movie would be great, probably my favorite director ever. And yep, Raise The Red Lantern would be a great release, my fave Yimou, and great cinematography.

Just because it was shot for TV doesn't mean it wouldn't look good. It was still shot on film. TV has nothing to do with it. Some of the cinematography is amazing, but the best DVD edition with the proper color timing is region 2, I believe.

And I'd love Veronique, of course. It's a beautiful film.

How is it important again? Is it because everyone knows of it? I think Kurosawa has alot more important films than that one. Popular movies isn't always important. Seventh Seal isn't Bergman's best either IMO. Millions of people would disagree because it's the only one they have seen of his, and that it's talked about all the time, so they think it's the best "art" film of all time.

I second that. And i dare to say that neither Seven Samurai nor The Seventh Seal figure in my top 10 list of each director - though i bought the Seventh Seal bd, of course.

O.K.

I asked before, but perhaps people just assumed I was too lazy to google.....

Here's the deal, I don't want to ruin the movie with spoilers, although I'm aware of much of the history, but it's not archival footage stuff, since it's a fully cast movie......

SO,

CHE..... How do they portray him in this film? Positive light, Negative light, little of both?

I have obviously not seen this film, and most google attempts either start giving too much info, or their synopsis reads like a text-book with a basic outline of the time-line of the film.

I can say that Transformers 2 was the greatest movie of all time because he completely transformed (see what I did there?) the action genre into being art while also inventing every single film technique known to man.

Sure that's my opinion but it's 100% wrong. Need to understand that just because you like something doesn't make it "the best".

Soderbergh doesn't really take a political side.. its not a biography per se, so you only get bits and pieces of who he really is.

I'm wondering the same things...to be honest I had opportunities to see it in NYC and didn't because I had mixed feelings.

Seven Samurai is probably my fav Kurosawa, along with Ran... Seventh Seal isn't my fav Bergman, but is up there with Through a Glass Darkly, Fanny & Alexander, Persona & Wild Strawberries. Then again, my favorites sometime change depending on my mood.

Same here, my favorites usually changes seats, but i'll guess my 3 favs from Kurosawa are Rashomon, Ikiru and Yojimbo, and the 3 from Bergman are Persona, Hour Of The Wolf (his most underrated movie) and Autumn Sonata - this one, by the way, needs an urgent upgrade (the criterion dvd edition is still letterboxed

I just watched The Complete Monterey Pop Collection box set and found the the PQ was a bit better than the DVD(I only have the single disc of the original film), but the most improvement was in the soundtrack IMO. Funny that the single Blu-ray is currently selling for 44.99 while for two dollars more you can have the Complete Monterey Pop 2-disc box set for 46.99!

I seen and own the film(s) (made Blockbuster sell me rental copies the day it came out , though still buying the blu-ray), Steven Soderbergh does not take sides in this film. Though it shows Guevara's "good" deeds more so, since it is about 2 "POINTS" (let's get that straight) in his life, the rise and fall points. Soderbergh mostly went away from the political side of things, and mostly showed a beautiful film that reminded me of Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God in some scenes, and in others' a biopic like I never seen before. Really fells like it isn't a biopic.

If you are a fan of film (in which I know you are) and can sit for about 5 hours, you will love it, unless you are on the "CHE Hate" thing.
