Well thanks to the Amazon sale, over the past two days I've bought 8 1/2, Breathless, The Red Shoes, Yojimbo and Sanjuro and America Lost and Found (All blind buys). I've read a lot of good things about all these so I can't wait until I can watch them all.

Yes, the amazon sale has been rather nice. My collection is blossoming quite quickly as well

Since most of us are rather keen on expressing our love for certain Criterion movies. What are some of the worst that you have seen?...if any. I think it would be an interesting conversation to discuss the titles that perhaps shouldn't have been given the CC process.

Mine thus far:

I had a hard time with The Man Who Fell to Earth. I initially thought the acting was atrocious at times. I plan on giving this another shot at some point, as Criterion movies tend to require such a thing.

Antichrist was also a bit "much" for me but I still very much respect the symbolism throughout the movie.

What say you?...or if not, just let this post fade into the abyss and forget it ever happened

I remember posting that I hated Red Desert so much that I couldn't even get through it, and subsequently got destroyed with hatred. I did end up watching the whole thing, but still wasn't that impressed. Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence wasn't that great for me, either.

If we're going with Criterions we thought we'd hate and ended up really enjoying, I've got to say that Close Up REALLY surprised me.

I saw The Man Who Fell to Earth on Anchor Bay's DVD and I wasn't too impressed with it upon first viewing. It is one film, however, of many, that I have always wanted to revisit. You're right in that a lot of the CC movies require a second viewing, whether you enjoyed it the first time or not. I needed to see Last Year at Marienbad...that was stuck in my head the first time I gave it a shot. I enjoyed it, but I liked it more the second time.

Army of Shadows was incredible, and, out of every CC I've seen, it is the one that has been nagging me to watch again the most. Not because I needed to understand it better, like with Marienbad, but out of sheer enjoyment.

As for titles not so worthy...I was not a big fan of Fear and Loathing when I rented it a while back. I'm interested in giving that its second shot. It does tend to get lots of love and my best friend absolutely raves about it.

Both are great. I prefer The Seventh Seal personally but you truly can't go wrong with either one.

Silent Naruse is down to 19.99 on AMZ

http://www.amazon.com/Eclipse-26-Eve...4620917&sr=8-1

It was in my gold box as well so I saved another dollar.

I have been waiting for this to drop for awhile, When A Woman Ascends the Stairs is fantastic and have been wanting to add more Naruse

I understand baseball cards, out of the pack, can be called "mint" if their condition is perfect. However, I think films are different. I tend to attribute "mint" to factory sealed films.
Mint is mint. The cellophane covering the case does not increase it's condition.

That's a GREAT price and it's a great set to boot. If you have a multi-region BD/DVD player, both BFI and MoC have Naruse DVD sets that are just as good.

I wound up buying the Silent Naruse for slightly less than you with a recent B & N 50% off coup, plus 10% off to begin with and 10% for being a member.

It ensures what is inside doesn't have finger prints or scratches on it. In that way it does increase the value.

What has more value?

A. Sealed Third Man Blu-ray
B. NEW Third Man Blu-ray (opened)

Surely it's A.

While that's true, the term mint, however, is usually given to pre-owned or opened items that are still in excellent condition. Based on Amazon's own guidelines, the proper term for B would be "Like New" or as they say, in mint condition.

Holy crap you know what I mean. It is in really good condition. The disc and case are perfect and it has the insert. OK?

Whenever I sell on amazon as a used Item I usually give all the info I can. For instance if I sold a copy of Blow Out and it looked brand new like the wrapper was off. I would list it as "Mint Condition Case and Disc Includes Booklet Ships First Class Next Business Day" I am too anal retentive on my covers etc. However if there is a torn insert etc I will note that.

For instance I recently sold off a Blu-ray that originally came with a slipcover and maybe I bought it at Barnes & Noble who rarely have slipcovers I would Note in my listing that the item has NO slipcover.

Most hardly ever mention the condition etc of the item in too much detail.

then again I have 100% feedback on my orders.

Agreed Shell...but if someone is as anal as me with both their DVDs and BDs...then there are absolutely no scrathces and/or fingerprints on the disk...the case is not scratched or dinged and any insert is in the same condition that I bought it.

If anything...there is no guarantee that a sealed copy might not have a loose or scratched disk, a cracked case (inside) and the booklet or insert might be dinged, ripped, or missing altogether.

An open DVD/BD is able to be "inspected" and deemed to be in "fair", "good", "very good" and/or "mint"condition.

Not a Blu-ray (yet), but this one comes to mind.

I would be very hard pressed to say no to a BD release of The Blob.
