If you can arrange it, save Diabolique for a dark and stormy night.

I know it's not in Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds territory but is it far enough out that a studio (Universal?) would let it go? It would be great if they did, though. Shadow of a Doubt is without a - okay, that would be lame even for me - unquestionably one of his best films and along with Rope it's on my 'cannot wait to upgrade' list. |

[Show spoiler] Stylistically Antonioni films are pretty slow, plodding even. I've only seen a couple, but he's about as slow as I can enjoy because he uses image (much) more than words to tell the story. Though I remember not liking Blow Up particularly much when I watched it a few years ago for class. *You're right, Corrado's intentions are very open to interpretation/not clear, though I feel a part of that is due to the actor - who I don't believe is particularly great in this role. It was also Hitchcock's personal favorite of his movies as well. We really, really need more Hitch on blu man, and I'm talking even outside the standard accepted masterpieces we're all waiting on like Rear Window, Vertigo, and The Birds; there's Strangers on a Train, The 39 Steps, The Man Who Knew Too Much (either), Notorious, Rope, Marnie, so on...

The funny thing that comes out when illustrious directors trash talk others (Bergman, Godard, Tarkovsky and others were guilty of this) is the realization that some of the best filmmakers were also deeply insecure.

I don't know about the rest of you all, but my opinion is Red Desert is prob my fav film Criterion has released so far on blu-ray (the transfer is another story, the BFI).
And off-topic, I just watched The Green Hornet, and my, was that enjoyable. I don't care for not 1 Michel Gondry film before this, and was surprised how fun this film was. Last edited by SpiderBaby; 05-12-2011 at 10:35 PM. |

Hitchcock films by US distributor, AFAIK:
Universal (many of these licensed from Hitchcock Estate) Saboteur Shadow of a Doubt Rope Rear Window The Trouble with Harry The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) Vertigo Psycho The Birds Marnie Torn Curtain Topaz Frenzy Family Plot MGM (some licensed from ABC) The Lodger Sabotage Young & Innocent Rebecca Spellbound Notorious The Paradine Case Warner Suspicion Mr & Mrs. Smith Stage Fright Strangers on a Train I Confess Dial M for Murder The Wrong Man North by Northwest Rank/Carlton (licensed to Criterion) The 39 Steps Granada (licensed to Criterion) The Lady Vanishes Castle Hill Foreign Correspondent (coming soon to Criterion via same deal as Stagecoach) Kino Jamaica Inn Image Under Capricorn Fox Lifeboat Paramount To Catch a Thief The other earlier titles (such as Blackmail, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), or Secret Agent) are either public domain or have yet to get a notable US label to license them for a decent DVD release. |

Really good news about Cul-de-sac if it turns out to be true. I have a region 4 DVD of the film that I have put quite a few miles on, (blue cover) so it will be nice to get the Criterion BD upgrade.
Also, I find Red Desert to be mesmerizing. To each their own. |

I think you have to try to key in on the visual and keep the plot...or the lack of a plot, in the background. I found that the case, even with a more "plot based" film like "The Passenger".
