Just finished watching Something Wild, quite enjoyed it and the transfer is pretty descent, not much in the way of extras though..

Not sure what to watch next:

Diabolique
Fear & Loathing
Pale Flower
Amarcord

Any suggestions?

If you can arrange it, save Diabolique for a dark and stormy night.

I wonder if they'd even have a shot at something like Shadow of a Doubt.

I know it's not in Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds territory but is it far enough out that a studio (Universal?) would let it go?

It would be great if they did, though. Shadow of a Doubt is without a - okay, that would be lame even for me - unquestionably one of his best films and along with Rope it's on my 'cannot wait to upgrade' list.

Shadow of a Doubt is my all-time favorite one of his movies. I would love for that to come out.

It was masterfully composed and photographed, but the actual "story" and characters were totally uninteresting to me. Carrado especially. I couldn't really understand his motives, nor cared to. He was just wandering around, talking slowly, offering half-witted philosophical insights on the world.

Scenes were long, nothing happened, and even though it was most probably supposed to convey a sense of isolation and alienation from the world - or something akin to that - it didn't save the movie from being painful to go through. There were certain scenes that stood above the ensemble, but the characters were mostly void. It may have been another Antonioni exercise on the shalowness of bourgeoisie, but God, let's hope he had something more to offer after devoting three movies to that.

I've read on and about the movie, I've seen it twice, but I'm still not convinced. I had the feeling that sometimes Antonioni was just trying too hard. Giuliana's sickness never really felt genuine to me, something was lacking in Vitti's interpretation. One has to display terrible patience to go through her scenes with Richard Harris. Both seemed to have absolutely nothing to say but slow, pseudo-philosophical verbiage.
I find it pretty fascinating, a rumination on a woman - and a man, kind of - unfit to adapt to their surroundings and dealing with it in their own way. (KIND OF SPOILER)-->
[Show spoiler]I'm not entirely sure you're supposed to buy that Guiliana is sick per se...no one in the film really does save *Corrado, who (I think, though there are differing interpretations) takes advantage of her sexually as his means of dealing with his demons, if you will. And then she rejects him; as physical pleasures are not what she wants or needs. Her 'sickness' is a spiritual one

Stylistically Antonioni films are pretty slow, plodding even. I've only seen a couple, but he's about as slow as I can enjoy because he uses image (much) more than words to tell the story. Though I remember not liking Blow Up particularly much when I watched it a few years ago for class.

*You're right, Corrado's intentions are very open to interpretation/not clear, though I feel a part of that is due to the actor - who I don't believe is particularly great in this role.

It was also Hitchcock's personal favorite of his movies as well. We really, really need more Hitch on blu man, and I'm talking even outside the standard accepted masterpieces we're all waiting on like Rear Window, Vertigo, and The Birds; there's Strangers on a Train, The 39 Steps, The Man Who Knew Too Much (either), Notorious, Rope, Marnie, so on...

What studio owns Lifeboat? Maybe Criterion could get their hands on that one, as it seems to be one that always falls through the cracks.

The funny thing that comes out when illustrious directors trash talk others (Bergman, Godard, Tarkovsky and others were guilty of this) is the realization that some of the best filmmakers were also deeply insecure.

A quick perusal of IMDB appears to me that Twentieth Century FOX owns the home distribution rights on this title. I know there have been some FOX titles - The Thin Red Line, The Leopard - that have been released by Criterion.

I don't know about the rest of you all, but my opinion is Red Desert is prob my fav film Criterion has released so far on blu-ray (the transfer is another story, the BFI).

And off-topic, I just watched The Green Hornet, and my, was that enjoyable. I don't care for not 1 Michel Gondry film before this, and was surprised how fun this film was.

The image is an improvement, needless to say, but I'm not digging the new cover art/design at all.

Spent too much on Criterion Blu-rays recently, but damn I am finding it hard to hold out for the B&N sale after seeing the Solaris review over at DVD Beaver.

I expect a review will be going up here soon? That may just tip be over the edge

I'm in the same boat. $27 is pretty close to begin with and if it shows up in my gold box I'll almost certainly just say screw it.

And the weird part is I'm not even sure why I'm so itchy to pick this up.

Really good news about Cul-de-sac if it turns out to be true. I have a region 4 DVD of the film that I have put quite a few miles on, (blue cover) so it will be nice to get the Criterion BD upgrade.

Also, I find Red Desert to be mesmerizing. To each their own.

It's cos Warner just upstaged them with the Kane UC edn which has The Magnificent Ambersons.

I'll need till Monday to get my drooling under control.

I think you have to try to key in on the visual and keep the plot...or the lack of a plot, in the background. I found that the case, even with a more "plot based" film like "The Passenger".

That is good to hear CG, as I just got it from blockbuster. I figured it might be a silly movie. I was a fan of the tv show when I was younger, so hopefully it will not disappoint.
