Wow, Ace in the Hole is fantastic news!! I am stunned to see this one coming to blu-ray before Sunset Blvd. but it surely rivals the more well known film as Billy Wilder's best!

The Killing isn't my favorite noir, but I can't pass up the opportunity to add another classic Kubrick to my collection. I'll pass on the two early Hitchcocks... I'm waiting on Vertigo, Rebecca, Notorious, Spellbound, Rear Window, Strangers on a Train, etc.

I have seen "When a Woman..." as well. Enjoyed it enough to purchase the existing BFI, MoC, and CC Naruse boxsets. It's unfortunate that none of these will be released on BD, except for maybe, "When a Woman...", which I hope CC will release at some point in the future.

Well...I have determined that I am not a big fan of Kurosawa's Samurai films (though I do own Seven Samurai), but really like his post WWII films...so much so that I'm considering a purchase of that Eclipse set during the next sale.

Here's hoping for The Killing and The Lady Vanishes for August. It's my birthday month, so let's get a blu upgrade for two of my favorite films.

Off topic, I have a $5 Vudu credit if anyone wants it. Code is VWT5PEBYXCCCYYU8 . Up from grabs.

I'm debating on getting Days of Heaven and Summer Hours. Both are still reasonably priced at Amazon. Any thoughts on either of those two? I have my other Criterions listed on "my movies list"

Days of Heaven is a must. Quite possibly the most beautifully photographed movie ever. Summer Hours is more of a see it before you buy it. I personally loved it, especially the end, though I could see how some would dislike it.

Thanks,
I really liked the Thin Red Line. It was a little long, but it was visually beautiful and I liked the voice overs. So I think Days of Heaven will be something I will like too.

I'm thinking I will like Summer Hours, because I like watching the family dynamics when families are dealing with what life has given them.

Anyway, watched The Night of the Hunter the other day, and while I liked it, I didn't think it was the masterpiece some people made it out to be. Granted, that's only after the first viewing, and most of the time movies need to grow on me. I am really interested in the special features, though it's going to take some time to get to watch all of them.
I thought that when I first watched it as well. Some of the acting (especially of the kids) seemed quite wooden and/or theatrical and mannered. Also, the first act seemed a tad muddled with the mother turning into a religious nut seeming to come out of nowhere (though I understand what they were trying to show).

However, the rest of it REALLY picked up, and I ultimately view it as a gothic fairytale which isn't exactly striving for realism. When I watched it the second time round I also liked it a lot more, and watching the river boat scene in a smoky room in the dark is one of my favourite film viewing experiences of late

^Seconded.

And it's much shorter than The Thin Red Line - half the runtime - and only one character voiceovers so it's more focused.

I think it's hard to top Thin Red Line and The New World, visually stunning-wise, but Days of Heaven comes close.

Either that or you could buy SWAT on Blu-ray for only $7. Either one will do.

Actually for the same price as Summer Hours you could buy SWAT, The Legend of Zorro, Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Goes to Jail. One good movie or four terrible ones... you decide.
