On another note, how different are the 2 films, Black Orpheus and Orpheus? And in what way are they different? I enjoyed Black Orpheus a lot, and am anxious to see Cocteau's version, as it looks like something I'd like. Thanks! |

I have a feeling the same person assembled these booklets and cut the same page. I'd be curious if I looked at what page it was if it was the same as yours. To top things off UPS has updated their incorrect status for my Amazon order with the dreaded "A postcard has been sent to the recipient requesting that they contact UPS". Now if they have the incorrect address how the heck are they going to send me a postcard to request I call ups. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I have a feeling the driver tried to deliver to the wrong address then assumed it was the address on the package that was wrong not his own incompetence. I guess I'll try and get Amazon to send me a new package and have that one returned to sender. And I was really looking forward to watching Diabolique ![]() |

I would contact amazons cust service to see if they can just go ahead and send out a replacement. Even if UPS is able to correct the address on the label it always delays delivery until the next business day. So it is just as well they send a replacement and usually amazon sends those as NDA. |

Beta, have you received another one of the pre-orders from Criterion lately? My most recent one shipped last thursday, but still no tracking info on their site or package arrival. They usually use priority mail or UPS and it arrives very quickly on past orders. I e-mailed Criterion on monday, but as usual, no reply as of yet. Checking to see if you received any orders from them and what shipment method they used. Maybe they went media mail?
forget it Beta, they just e-mailed me the tracking and said some items were backordered. seems strange considering its coming from Criterion. Last edited by jcs913; 05-18-2011 at 05:18 PM. |

I think Ozu will always be my favorite Japanese director...but I've branched out a bit. You might like him...but in regards to my expanding tastes... Naruse: If you really like Mizoguchi, then I've got a feeling you'll like Naruse as well. Like Mizoguchi, he looks at post war scenarios with the trials and tribulations of "the common man". His style and sensibilities are a lot like Ozu's, but as Ozu has more of a positive "zen-like" outlook on even stories ending in tragedy, Naruse has more of the atttitude of "life is like continually walking into the same wall", so nothing seems to get any better. Ozu also went from a look at middle to low income families in his post war films, to more upper class families as he got older and richer...Naruse kept in the same low income socio-economic groups. Kurosawa: I'm not big on his Samurai films, though I own and like "Seven Samurai". I've recently discovered his post war Eclipse set and have LOVED it. Most especially his films starring Setsuko Hara (GOD what a honey!). I will most assuredly pick up this Eclipse set during the next sale and will buy "High and Low". Mizoguchi: I've been slower to warm to Mizoguchi...but watched the last of his four films in his Eclipse set and really enjoyed it. I might purchase this set during the next sale as well. It's unfortunate that Naruse and Mizoguchi don't get the same love as Kurosawa and Ozu...proven by the fact that the only available Naruse in the US is his silent Eclipse set and "When a Woman Ascends the Stairs" and two DVD boxsets in the UK. Mizoguchi has his US Eclipse set as well and "Sansho the Bailiff" and a UK DVD boxset. Other than their (1) Criterion individual release each, I don't think that there is much chance of any of their other films being released on blu. |

Naruse, Mizoguchi, and Ozu are really the early fathers of Japanese cinema...they all started during the silent days. |

While its not a big deal this is the kind of thing that drives me crazy. Especially with a criterion. I'd be lying if I didn't say I like their Blu-rays to all be in mint condition as a collector and retain their value. I'd never sell Army of Shadows because I loved it, but if I did I'd have to list it as damaged. ![]() Also thanks for the UPS/Amazon suggestions. I drove down to UPS and got my package. They said Amazon shipped it to a residential address, but the address is a business address. Never in my life heard that one before. Meanwhile I recieved 2 other packages at the same address from Amazon. Think I should place my business name in Amazon's first address line and the street in the second? |

Today I received my shipment of Broadcast News, Amacord and The Red Shoes.
I love the package of the Amacord BD edition. I was admiring the booklet, and when I reached the back.....there was no disc! Lol I couldn't believe it. I had read about it on here before, but didn't think it'd ever happen to me. The BD was shrink wrapped, but no disc inside. How can this happen? Anyway, Amazon.com is sending me a new copy, so at least I am going to have a spare cover, which is cool. I just finished watching Broadcast News, and I loved it! This is such a wonderfully written film. I like many a James L. Brooks film, and this one sure is one of them. Film: 4,5 PQ: 4+ AQ: 4 |
