Just received an email from Amazon, notifying me that they cancelled my $1.00 cul-de-sac order...oh well.

It really is a beautifully atmospheric film. I particularly love the somber, droning music by Tindersticks. Would love to get the soundtrack but it's only available in the recently released, somewhat expensive Claire Denis box set, and I haven't seen/heard any of her other films yet.

These are all 2-disc releases that come in one single packaging devoted to one particular film. There are other multi-disc releases like (i.e. Che, By Brahkage) but I wouldn't categorize them the same as the releases listed below.

Released:
The Leopard
The Night Of The Hunter
Seven Samurai

Upcoming:
The Battle Of Algiers

Me too. Oh well. Maybe now it will motivate me to buy the blu-ray version instead. It's weird that they honor some price mistakes, but not others. For example, The Goonies blu-ray set for $6 was honored.

Saw Bigger Than Life. Impressive film. Definitely one of the finest performances James Mason ever gave.

I guess the X ray scene was meant to be symbolic?

I think it is wishful thinking. Mine has been showing "shipping soon" for 2 days. Will be a great Tuesday with that and "The Great Dictator."

I just finished watching The Thin Red Line, it was everything I thought it would be and more. It was really thought provoking and the transfer on it was perfect.

All Criterions are 50% off, plus various additional coupons and discounts for members, during B & N's twice-annual sales. That's the time and place to purchase them.

Interesting read over at Criterion Cast. Criterion added nearly 40 films to their Hula content recently, icluding ten titles not in the current collection (including Eclipse). Here are the ten titles:

Q Planes (1939)
The Squeaker (1937)
Conquest Of the Air (1936)
Death Drums Along The River (1963)
Lydia (1941)
Over the Moon (1939)
Forget Me Not (1936)
The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936)
The Ghost Goes West (1935)
Cure (1997)

It'll be interesting to see if these turn up in the collection anytime soon.

I apologize if this has been covered before but I was sitting here watching "The Naked Kiss" BD. The music is swelling and suddenly the audio kind of "stutters" for a few seconds, then goes quiet and you hear what sounds like soft footsteps...then it cuts to the next scene and you hear the piece of music fade out.

I played it back several times, just to be sure it wasn't my player (PS3) or something. Sure enough, it happens every time.

This happens during chapter seven at 24:54 in the time code.

Can anyone please confirm/deny that this is a universal issue, or if I may have a defective disc.

Thanks.

-Dave

Just got my shipping confirmation. Traded in a bunch of textbooks to amazon so I havent had to use my own money for all the Criterions and PS3 games I've been getting

A "cool, seductive jewel" indeed.
I just finished watching this myself and wholeheartedly concur!

Lastly, finish watching my last copy of the criterion collection film I own at the moment, Le Cercle Rouge, another Jean-Pierre Melville film.

This is a story about 3 men:
  • Corey - act by Alain Delon, an aristocratic thief who has been in prison for five years.
  • Vogel - act by Gian Maria Volonte, a dangerous criminal who has been recently captured by the police.
  • Jansen - act by Yves Montand, an ex-cop and sharpshooter who is slowly killing himself to death.
The only actress that have a dialog is Rico women, ex women of Corey as well. Beware - she is frontal topless in this film
  • Movie - 3.5 Star (For me, it is not as brilliant as user/reviewer give, it just a simple gangster film, as usual slow story movement, His another direct film - Army of Shadows (I rate 5 star for this) is far far better compare with this)
  • PQ - 4 Star (it is clean, clear, the only complain is it slightly ghosting effect in certain area.)
  • AQ - 4 Star (No complain on it Monaural track)
  • Extra - 3 Star (They is few Archival Footage capture the interview with the director, I hardly finish it, too bored, seeing him talking is same as bored as seeing his direct film.) :P
  • Overall - 3.5 Star

I checked this out for you. I hear the same exact audio issues you are are hearing. I can only guess that this is the way the film elements used by Criterion are preserved. (Flawed)

Thank you for checking on this Monty.

I am glad to know my copy is ok, but I wonder why they (Criterion) couldn't/didn't do a fade out on the music, or something to mask the abrupt cut.

Either way, I still liked the film quite a bit. From the part where the rehearsal takes place, it really kicks in and holds you until the end. That song is haunting, eerie, and yet beautiful at the same time. I really liked it a lot, to be honest.

Cannes Winners here, if anyone is interested. Maybe some of these will end up with Criterion, who knows. Tree of Life opens in my city June 3rd, so luckily I won't have to wait long to see what all the fuss is about.
