Does anyone think is about time Criterion give us some Fassbinder in BD ? I am saying this because I am really interested in seeing Berlin Alexanderplatz (To make things clear, I HAVE NOT seen this one but am extremely intrigued by it ) and seeing how Criterion holds the rights for this one (At least in DVD) I thing it would be a great addition and a sure blind-buy from me (In case I can't get to seeing it earlier).

I doubt that would be the first Fassbinder on blu. Rumor is WORLD ON A WIRE is coming to Criterion and seeing they have said they only plan a few months ahead, this might be the 1st one they get to (highly doubt they have one planned this year).

Well at least it is some Fassbinder , isn't it? In another note, I can't express how happy am I about Terrence Malick winning Palm d'Or. Having not seen "Tree of Life" yet, I can't really assure it deserved the award over all the other films at competition but I really like Malick. He is an extraordinary director who takes his time doing and perfecting all his films. So it was time to recognize him for something. Here is hoping Tree of Life is one hell of a film .

There was fuss before he even finished the film. People rated the film before it was released. Not surprised by this. Whatever floats people's boat I guess.

oh my god people are hyping a mysterious and ambitious film by a widely acclaimed director that he has been working on for 30 years? He must have brainwashed the masses!

Hyping and rating it on Mubi, IMDB, etc, calling it the greatest film ever before seeing it is 2 different things (and that is what I was commenting on). So keep it in your pants.

Like MOST of these people have been waiting for it for 30 years. Give me a break.

I've seen you moan about this multiple times. Who cares? Fan reaction has nothing to do with the merits (or lack of) of a filmmaker. If you want to worry about something that doesn't matter what so ever, then be my guest.

A few weeks ago I watched Downfall on Saturday night and The Great Dictator the following Monday afternoon.

I'm still recovering from the psychic whiplash.

I havent seen anything by Refn but "Drive" looks interesting both from the response and because my future wife Carey Mulligan is in it . I'm also really curious to see if Fox will end up putting out the Tree of Life blu down the line. Criterion posts A LOT of Tree Of Life news on twitter and facebook, and Criterion and Malick seem to have a good relationship (new rumor is he helped them acquire Badlands....), so it wouldnt surprise me if Criterion has something up their sleeve for this one.

Hey all.

I watched "Breathless" last night and I have to admit that I wasn't all that impressed by it. I am not quite sure why.

I imagined that it was more of a gangster/crime movie I suppose. To me, it was more of a love story of sorts...maybe I am just too young, or not educated enough, to see whatever it is that everyone raves about. The reviews for this movie are so good that reading them actually made me want to re-watch this film again today, just to see if I saw what I had missed the first time around.

Perhaps I will have to re-visit it right away.

Sounds like you felt that way because you had a completely wrong idea of what to expect. I loved it and was blown away by how much it felt like a contemporary film. I also became more in awe the more I read about it. So maybe brush up a bit and watch it again.

After watching Breathless, Le Mepris, and a few others, I basically decided that the "French new wave" isn't for me. I know plenty of people love these movies but I found them tedious and annoying.

Come on, the portrayal of Hitler in both movies is not that different .

I think it's often forgotten that Claude Chabrol was the mainstream New Wave Director of the times, his Work is completely different thing and far from tedious, but as he never was the Arthouse Movie maker at the time his titles have not received the same treatment as Godard or Truffaut, but let's hope for more releases and the view what New Wave was not been determined by Godard alone, there was more to it, not only those hailed today.
And the other thing; "Le Mepris" is very far away from what French New Wave was considered or even Godard, and was a Movie that at the time was badly received because of it. It was regarded as Hollywood style overproduced. I still like better than most of his other works.
Bande à part, Masculine Feminine, Vivre sa vie being my Godard favorites.

Since I bundled up the shipping.... it looks like I have some Chaplin due in the mail today (with four other goodies ) I'll watch this this with my kids.... my son thinks Modern Times and City Lights are hysterical, so this should be right up his alley!

The is exactly the point, but it's influences started very early on, a Movie like French Connection would not been the same without the influence of the French New Wave. Handheld Camera and moments that are not essential to the plot but add to a overall feeling of the Movie.
