FYI, Canada Post is officially doing what they call a rolling strike. Right now, Winnipeg Postal Workers are off the job for 24 hours. After 24 hours, more cities will go for a period of 24 hours, and so on and so forth.

DHL has released the following:

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has announced that they will start strike activities at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Thursday, June 2, 2011. A news release from the CUPW said the strike will begin in Winnipeg for 24 hours, after which it will continue in other locations to be announced later. Due to the nature of the rolling strike format, DHL Global Mail will pick-up and process mail and parcels to Canada as normal, however delays are to be expected as a result of the work disruptions in Canada. Canada Post has not released a statement as to how they will handle mail in those areas affected by the strike, and possible backlogs in processing. DHL Global Mail is working to review alternate solutions in the event the strike continues for a prolonged amount of time. We will continue to monitor events surrounding the strike and ongoing negotiations between Canada Post and the CUPW, and provide updates as they develop.

So for any of my fellow Canadians who ordered Criterions from Amazon.com, your stuff will hopefully show up eventually. That wasn't quite grammatically sound, but there's really no other way to put it. It sucks, to put it bluntly. At least Amazon sent me Monterey Pop via UPS, and it's going to show up at my mom's place today while I'm at work. I'll get it when I go home for a weekend visit. So disappointed that my order of The Secret of Kells, Bigger than Life, and Au Revoir Les Enfants has been delayed even further.

My b-day is August 18, 1985 to add to that train of though.

And the detractors will still not like it because it's too popular

It's so easy to put Ikiru on top of a list. On the other hand I've watched Seven Samurai endless times and it's 207 minutes long and despite that it never feels like it has lengths, it's just a perfect storytelling in any way. You can't beat that and that's one of the most import things, how the story unfolds.
And the scene in forest in the flower field is among the most beautiful things I've ever seen on film.

Mifune holding the baby by the mill is my favorite. Great scene.

That scene is so heart breaking, but than again it's so well established where the Mifune character is coming from, by the time this scene plays out it's so sad how everything he tries to be and all the things he tries to escape has a very simple reason.

Spoiler alert I guess... (Seven Samurai)

The character that single handedly retrieves the musket from the bandits is such a well written/perfectly acted role. The esteem the youngest member holds him in, the humility/wisdom and strength that emanates from his persona is one thing that makes Seven Samurai the masterpiece it is. (among so many others)

I love the scene when this samurai (Kyuzo) returns from his overnight mission and sits down to get some rest. (the interaction between him and the young samurai)

Congratulations. Now you never have to watch it again. Believe me, I know how good that feels.

Just finished watching The Great Dictator. Chaplin gave his usual outstanding performance, and the supporting cast was also wonderful.

I was happy to see Maurice Moscovich, as I love him in Make Way for Tomorrow. That makes two Caplin masterpieces, bring on the rest.

Just added Naked and Diabolique to the list. Diabolique's listed as a pre-order on my page as it won't ship from Amazon Canada until Naked, and my other pre-order, There But For Fortune, a Phil Ochs documentary that's only out on DVD, ship. Naked was 70 cents cheaper, and Diabolique was around a dollar more. Hopefully the postal strike will be cleared up by then. Slowly, but surely, I'm picking off my Criterion wish list.

Edit: Forgot to add, the booklet for Monterey Pop has a teeny tear in it, like it got pushed up against the case. I'm not going to bother complaining since it was an import, and I'm more concerned about the film anyways. It's nice to have the booklets, but I'm not as fussy as some of you fellow Criterion fans. Too bad I have to wait until tomorrow to watch it, as my parents don't have a player yet. They're getting one when they go to the states though.

Also, FYI, TCM is showing Black Narcissus on Tuesday night if anyone's afraid of blind buying it. They showed The Sweet Smell of Success yesterday, but I forgot about it since I just watched my own copy.

Oh, and June 25, 1985. Is it sad that I already am starting to feel old? Just thinking that people that were born when I was 15 are turning 11 this year freaks me out.
As someone who is turning 30 this December, I could seriously slap you.

P.S. Any chance of BADLANDS coming to Criterion, you think? They've already done DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE THIN RED LINE, after all...

I was finally going to pull the trigger on the Fanny and Alexander import but noticed both Amazon and this site have a listing for it. Has it even been hinted at by Criterion?

I am pretty confident that they will release Badlands. In fact, they recently tweeted an article about it:

and often their Twitter feed hints at future releases.

Then I better see Hopper's Out of the Blue released soon, since they tweeted about that last night showing in a new 35mm print (but I think they were just pimping out their Days of Heaven release since Linda Manz is in both).

Anyone else seen Tree of Life yet? Saw it today and it was wonderful, though it wont change anyone's minds on Malick. If you like his style, you'll love it, and if you think he sucks you'll think it sucks.

Not to mention, with the rumors about Badlands heading to Criterion with Malick's help, and Criterion posting quite a bit of Tree of Life coverage on Facebook and Twitter, I would not be surprised to see Criterion put this film out sometime next year.

The cosmos sequences go on for far too long, and it doesn't have any purpose in the story. In fact it detracts from the movie, and any connection we have to the family. You could remove all of those scenes and the movie wouldn't change a bit. It looked great though.
