Thanks. Much appreciated!

To get back ontopic; can I expect a Criterion blu ray of The Royal Tenenbaums? I'm asking because it's only the best movie EVER!!!

I'll pick it up even though I think it gets significantly worse after the first episode. It will be fun to show my friends it alongside the superior Che.
You watch both Movies in one go? That's about 10 hours.

I find Carlos to be the way better Movie. Never really liked Soderbergh, he's overrated.
And as similar looking as Benicio is, he lacks the life and fire of Che's eyes, and looks like the tranquilizer version of Che.
Nothing against Benicio's abilities, he's just to easy going.

But that's just my opinion.

Just learned about certain criterion blu-rays being OOP and picked up The Third Man and Peirrot Le Fou. Are there many more of such titles where criterion has lost the license and wont producing any more discs?

Also, there seems to be certain DVDs (eg. Alphaville) that seem to be out of criterion's stable, is it only for the DVDs or we wont be getting any BD for those as well?

I watched Le Beau Serge on youtube last night. I was blown away, what a devastating tale of friendship, loss, and redemption. (also a powerful condemnation of alcoholism)

Maria was so beautiful! (WOW)

I should have learned by now not to doubt the film Criterion bring to the collection.

I know! I noticed that a bit later!! The other ones I got from various other sources...like SpiderBaby's predictions and the Carlos pre-announcement from Twitter. Also, Phantom Carriage was almost guaranteed with CC's photo on their fb page earlier.

Metalstorm...well, let's not go there.

#177 and #178 was purely coincidental, obviously. I just randomly said to myself...hmm, 177, looked up the title, and added it to my list

I would also have to agree; Carlos is just the better-directed series in almost every way. To be honest though, I don't think both have much in common and shouldn't be compared as companion pieces; if there's ever a film to watch side-by-side with Carlos, it's the Baader-Meinhof Complex, both dealing with similar issues and even a few similar characters and settings. If anything, Che Guevara only hovers over both films as a transient character, almost a shadow.

...murderous life and fire?

Dare we tread into discussing the biased material of the film Che?

Yes, there are plenty of DVDs now out-of-print from Criterion, but only three blu-rays so far... The Third Man, Pierrot le fou, and The Man Who Fell To Earth. On Criterion's first page of films, alone, you'll find that 9 out of 25 films are OOP. If you go through all 500+ films you'll find more.

If Criterion doesn't have the licensing rights to issue the films on DVD, then it's a pretty good guess that they won't be obtaining the rights to release the film on blu-ray.

Thanks. Choosing between a Criterion DVD and any other company's Blu-Ray wont be easy. I guess for older movies I might lean towards the DVDs. case in point Alphaville.

I think you're right about both counts. Nevertheless fascinating.(Che not the Movie) But murderous is a part of him, you're right he's been sanctified by society, which is a dangerous thing.
But I also meant fire in the sense of his willpower.

Wasn't Carlos originally reported to have both cuts (back when it was announced unofficially)?

Also, I hope they give the bitrate a lot of room to breathe unlike the other Blu releases thus far.

Agreed. He was definitely driven.
I haven't watched the whole film myself, because I grew a bit irritated with how he was being portrayed, but I'll probably give it another shot one of these days. I do love me some Del Toro and Soderbergh.

I'm not sure regarding the Criterion announcement, but the UK release by Optimum includes both the Theatrical presentation as well as the Trilogy. I would have assumed Criterion would follow suit, but maybe not?

Seems like plans have changed since then.

Unless they plan to put all 3 parts on one disc and the theatrical on its own disc.....which is a terrible idea.

Thanks. Amazon has been putting Eclipse sets in my gold box which has gotten me curious about things like Sapphire. I'm also starting to miss the ability to do quick 'will this totally turn me off' previews of blind buys I'm considering.

As a result I also finally watched Milk, which I've meant to watch since it came out but never got around to. I have to say that I didn't find the dramatization nearly as affecting or interesting. It was fine, and everyone was very good, but it was a little too earnest and had too much of a whiff of oscar bate to be something I revisit.

I would really strongly recommend the Criterion disc to anyone who is a lover of documentaries or doesn't know this story.
As much as I liked the film MILK, I also found THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK a bit more compelling. Essentially the screenplay for MILK is a carbon copy dramatization of the documentary and did not offer anything new other than fine acting. THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK stands very high on its own.

HighDefDigest said that Kiss Me Deadly is a brutal film at times. Just wondering, how violent is it? I'm pretty interested in knowing because you wouldn't think of a 50s containing a lot of violence like today's movies.

Brutal in its philosophy/tone/outlook more than in the blood/guts sense.

It's plenty violent but it's in an interesting middle-ground between the stylized or off-camera violence typical of the fifties and the graphic depictions of violence that became typical later.

It's not really explicitly bloody but it definitely has its cringe-inducing moments.
