Sounds very interesting. Thanks for the input, the both of you. I can't wait to see it.

They always found new ways to work around the Motion Picture Production Code. My favorite is the Big Heat, you can't hit a women but how about splashing hot Coffee in her face? Second would be the Big Combo, can't hit a officer of the law, but you can torture him by putting a hearing aid on him, turning up the volume and scream into the microphone. That one is genius it has no graphic violence but a very sadistic streak.

If you've seen any kind of modern gangster movie, Kiss Me Deadly is a walk in the park.

Not brutal, not unsettling in any way, really. Just a flat out entertaining noir with a twist.

As a result I also finally watched Milk, which I've meant to watch since it came out but never got around to. I have to say that I didn't find the dramatization nearly as affecting or interesting. It was fine, and everyone was very good, but it was a little too earnest and had too much of a whiff of oscar bate to be something I revisit.

I would really strongly recommend the Criterion disc to anyone who is a lover of documentaries or doesn't know this story.
i also just watched "The Times of Harvey Milk" and it is truly an affecting and inspiring documentary. Contrary to what i've seen others say, i could see this being easily re-watchable. i'm a sucker for history and seeing people unite for a common goal. I haven't seen "Milk", so i can't speak to it, but i highly recommend the documentary and can't wait to share it with my wife and others.

Diabolique is showing up today! I can't get it until Sunday, hopefully, despite my parents coming in to mount my TV on my hybrid stand, as they'll be mounting the TV when UPS shows up at their door around noon today. Hopefully my brother will be around, if not, I have to wait until the following weekend. I always ship stuff to my parents' place, inclusing stuff not delievered by courier, so I can ensure I get it, as I live in an apt, and work full-time. Also, I don't quite know where the post office is where I live, and it could potentially be in the sketchy area.

FYI Canadians who have Criterion orders through Amazon US with DHL (like me):

"Canada Post announced on June 14, 2011 that they were suspending operations across Canada, as a result of unsuccessful negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). As we do not know when Canada Post will resume operations, customers should hold their Canada Mail and Parcels until the situation is resolved. If this is not possible, DHL Global Mail will continue to pick-up mail and parcels destined to Canada, and provide storage at a flat rate cost until Canada Post communicates they will again start accepting packages. The processing and location of storage will be dependent upon the service selected for the mail and parcel items. Some items will be held at DHL Global Mail U.S. Mail Terminals, while other items will be processed, and transported to Canada to be stored at a DHL Global Mail Terminal In Canada. Security measures are in place at all DHL Global Mail Terminals to ensure the safety of all items. Once Canada Post resumes operations, all mail and parcels destined to Canada will be processed in a quick and efficient manner. DHL Global Mail will continue to monitor the events surrounding the dispute between the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post, and provide updates as they develop. Any questions regarding the pick-up and storage of mail and parcels destined to Canada, can be directed to your Regional Sales Manager or Customer Relationship Manager."

It sounds better than just outright rejecting stuff, and not giving any info on it.

If the dispute isn't resolved on monday morning, the government will issue a back-to-work legislation to force them to resume activities.

So I've bought 13 Criterions so far in 2011 totalling $191.68 for an average of $14.74 per. I would say that's pretty decent.

How many Criterions have you guys bought this year?

Yes. It always kind of amazes me that it was even made, especially in the 50s.

I have picked up just about all of the new spine numbers in 2011. (minus the Brakhage BD)

Paths of Glory is still being offered at @18.00 (walmart.com) and a bit more at amazon. PoG is one of my favorite and most viewed Criterion BD's I own.

Ordering direct is good also, but I do have a Prime account w/ amazon and if I don't get them on release date I get really cranky. haha (even if they generally arrive beforehand direct from CC)

Blu-rays? 1.
And when Modern Times sinks a little cheaper on Amazon, my collection will double in size.
