Haha, fantastic choice. I've been running this old Sony player since Blu-ray players were first made. Needless to say, I'm very excited to get the 550 in.

As for the BR disc. It's terrific. Outside of some roughing with the smoke in the fire scene it is as good as it gets on blu-ray.
I was in the mood for a foreign film, and it seemed like it good/great film at face value, and then it got better. I agree with you, while I was watching it, it just screamed classic film imo. The PQ is one of the reasons why I think it will probably not get a Criterion release, and I really enjoyed the supplemental features as well.

It is a new classic. The last new Movie I thought was a classic is the in 2000 released The Devils on the Doorstep, which I hope will be released someday on blu-ray.

I remember reading some time ago that Heaven's Gate was planned.

If Spartacus turns out to be true, that will be fantastic. I was hesitant to believe Universal would lend this one back out, seeing as how they were putting it out as a "50th Anniversary Edition" with a few extras (instead of doing a straight port of the DVD, like their versions of Fear & Loathing and Dazed & Confused). Since I refuse to get the Universal release, I was almost resigned to the fact that it would be the only Kubrick film (other than Fear & Desire, which may never get released) I wouldn't own on Blu-Ray. Criterion may make it possible!

If Criterion release Spartacus, won't they just be re-using Universal's master?
Has anyone here actually seen the much-criticised Universal release to confirm whether it really is dreadful?

I hope to pick up my first criterion, Hunger - and maybe Fish Tank, from the B&N sale in July. I think it's supposed to be a 50% off sale right?

I'm in the minority here, but it's not too bad, better than the Universal DVD by a long shot. Criterion would do a way better job though.

Amazon upped the price on their Criterions, some by 10 dollars or more. Booo!

Bigger Than Life, Solaris, Red Dessert and Blow Out are on the their way to austria.

Really wanted to buy Black Moon too, but ... something in me resisted ... maybe the 50 % off will change my mind

it seems amazon always ups there prices, right before they put them on sale. so im guessing the recent price hike on there criterions means they bout to go on sale.

Hopefully I will be getting one of my deep Discount orders today so I'll be sure to post the condition of the packaging.

Finally got around to watching Senso last night. Beautiful film as I expected. I think I actually enjoyed the plot more then The Leopard. Either that or it was just easier to follow. The same amount of amazing detail in the production is evident, but the colors seemed a little muted and the image soft in some places compared to The Leopard. From what I understand the original negative was in bad shape and a lot of effort was needed to get what we got. I'm ready for more Visconti. I guess the extended war scenes that were cut will never surface?

I'm on the fence about Black Moon. I may just have to wait till I see a decent price on it.

Don't believe random people on the internet who tell you otherwise.

If you are smart you'll do what I'm doing and sell all of your non-Criterion possessions so that you have the cash to take full advantage of this final sale. This includes selling your BD player and TV, as you'll need some undistracted time to read the booklets, stroke the spines (admit it) and work out how you are going to arrange your titles anyway. You can buy a new TV and BD player in November with the money you would have blown on the Criterion sale that definitely isn't going to happen.
I was being facetious (as you probably gathered)

My top pet peeves in this thread:
1. Constantly asking when the next BN sale is when it was revealed on 1 page earlier.
2. Letting others know when their item shipped (Outside of the big sales, mind you).
3. Poo-pooing a release because the film is "too popular"
4. Asking about replacement case information when one just has to mosey on over to http://www.criterion.com for their answer.

Then again, I've probably violated some of these and I post things that bug the crap out of you guys.

Sure you didn't see an item about Borders? They're the one that doesn't have an e-reader, and thus are in bankruptcy court. I think B&N are relatively healthy at the moment.

As much as I had planned to go nuts during the next sale...reality has hit me hard and I'll purchase very little if any in July. The last things due here are "People on Sunday", "Coere Fidele", and "The Great White Silence". I'll likely get the Keaton box set that's out in two weeks...and then play it by ear for the sale.

The only other choice was to build a functioning car out of a blu-ray player and my existing BD collection.
