Looks like a "silents" barrage this week. I received MoC's "Coere Fidele" yesterday, "People on Sunday" today and should get BFI's "The Great White Silence" in the next day or so. The only other pending order that I can afford at this time is the Keaton box set that should be coming in the next 2 weeks or so.

Keep the silents coming!
Rich, I'll 'quietly' agree with you...

BTW, hope the auto troubles are getting better....

Excellent thanks for the tip. I was going to go to B&N tomorrow to scope out some of the titles that they have in store. I do not think that the sale is that popular in my area. More movies for me.

I wish Amazon would have a sale on the newer titles, and the old as well, soon to combat the Barnes and Noble sale. Mainly because I want Zazie Dans Le Metro and Black Moon now and not in 3 weeks or so. $30 a piece at Amazon isn't going to cut it. Patience sucks.

Thanks John!

I wound up donating my old car to "Kars for Kids" and buying a new Kia Soul...I needed a combo of a family SUV and gas economy, as I need to use it for commuting to work. It's a pretty nice car and I'm quite happy with it...beats getting stranded!

Getting back on topic...I'm very pleased at the current influx of silent films coming out by both US and UK companies...I never get tired of seeing this!

Meh.

Blu-Ray:
The Music Room
Le Cercle Rouge
Paris, Texas
Videodrome
Kiss Me Deadly
Last Year at Marienbad
Walkabout

DVD:
Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy
Science is Fiction
La Jetee/Sans Soleil
Allan King Eclipse
Rohmer Set

Honestly, this year has been pretty boring for Criterion Blu-Ray. I only really wanted Blow Out and Solaris, so I bought those and I'll use the sale to catch up on some stuff I haven't bought yet from last year. I'll be checking out some films before the sale starts to see if I want anything else. I think the November sale (omg will it happen?!?) will have a lot more for me like Jean Vigo, Secret Sunshine, 3 Women, Carlos, possible Y Tu Mama Tambien and World on a Wire, etc.

Default The Phantom Carriage opinions?

Speaking of silent films, I wanted to get some opinions on The Phantom Carriage. I'm going to watch it, but I want to watch the other titles in my queue first, as the release date is after the July sale. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately I am not. Plus looking at their site it seems that they don't care those in stores. Just have to wait it out.

Glad to hear all worked out. I hope we can add to this glutten of silents being released too. Maybe some more Chaplin before years' end would be nice.

Will do Joe...I've watched a couple of snippets in the recent past on YouTube and have very high hopes for it.

Don't know if I'll watch that, the Jean Epstein, or the Captain Robert Scott first...all of them got very good reviews!

Black Moon and Zazie dans le metro are definite. Depending on how far in advance they offer pre-orders I will also pick up Beauty and the Beast and Leon Morin Priest. There really isn't anything else that I want at the moment. Well if they include August titles then I'll take The Killing and Orpheus. We will see.

Will the B&N sale include up to/including all the July titles?

From memory, the last sale included some pre-orders, but I doubt they will stretch into August will they?

The only pre-orders that are included are titles that are released during the course of the sale, if memory serves.

Many people consider TPC to be one of, if not the first, "horror" films ever made. The story works on the themes of regret, sorrow, and redemption. The look of the film is very atmospheric, as Sjostrom utilized interesting editing techniques to create his carriage and driver on screen.

I have seen the film a couple times. The KTL score seems to work perfectly for the film, but I understand that it polarized many fans. If you would like to see some clips they are available on youtube.

My shopping list...
Zazie dans le Metro
Naked
Sweetie

I prefer to sell used books and movies on Amazon. They collect payments for you, so no deadbeat eBay bidders.

Of course I'd like to sell as an entire lot, but I don't think that is in the cards - and is leading me to ask here. List individually in the trade forum or eBay?

Last night I watched Robinson Caruso on Mars, which might be the least pleasant Criterion release I've ever watched. I have a great love for low budget b movies, but this was more in realm of MST3K territory. The soundtrack consisted of the same 4 looped incredibly irritating sound effect, mixed so high in the mix I couldn't turn it down how enough.

The spaceship attack sequences were like being in Hell. I had to will myself not to just turn it off.

And that effing monkey! The kangaroo in Walkabout faired better; at least it was quick. I would feel sorry for it more, being held firmly in shot be someone hiding behind that rock, if its screeches weren't so irritating.

I am very glad I didn't end up blind buying this one.
