To me Black Moon is garbage. Marienbad felt like a proper mystery, like there was a story underneath, and hooked you in by only giving you small pieces here and there. Black Moon just felt like a big brown pile of "lol so random". All you have to do is call nonsense surrealism, and suddenly it can qualify as high art. It's the auteur equivalent of "a wizard did it".

For me to be able to stomach that kind of movie I need a really great atmosphere, style or fantastic imagery. I was entranced by Marienbad, and at least House didn't take itself seriously, but I didn't "feel" Black Moon at all, it was just ugly, off-putting and a chore to get through.

I would have thought it would be one of the most risky blind buys in the entire collection, but maybe I'm in the minority of not being enchanted by it.

I feel your pain Spidey. I came very close to canceling my People on Sunday this week. If I didn't already have Visa gift cards from last year that I never used...I wouldn't be getting anything at the next sale.

Haven't come up with a BD list yet...but am leaning toward the Post-War Kurosawa Eclipse set...finally saw all those films via NetFlix...love that Setsuko Hara!

Thankfully this sale is coming now.... other large expenses all came at once, and this sale is the only thing that will keep me from getting behind on all of the releases I want!

I know what you're talking about. Over the past few months, I've had to replace too much electronic stuff in such a short period of time... PS3, wireless router, laptop, dehumidifier, and possibly a new window air conditioner is going to be needed soon. All of this stuff decided to crap out on me at the same time.

Unfortunately, there's no Barnes & Noble in Australia.
It's a real shame that Criterion don't deliver internationally. The last time they had a sale, I had over $300 in my cart before I realised I couldn't get them
I've now put about $250 in a Barnes & Noble cart, which will hopefully come down to about $140 when the sale starts. I guess I'll have to decide then if I go ahead with it
Since we're all listing, here's mine:
The Killing, Battle of Algiers, If..., High and Low, Beauty and the Beast, Zazie Dans Le Metro, and Last Year at Marienbad.
I actually have the StudioCanal edition of Marienbad, but I'll sell that to a friend who can't play region-A Criterions.
I'm thinking of doing the same with my UK edition of Carlos, but I've just noticed Barnes and Noble haven't listed the Criterion blu-ray yet.

Thinking about picking up The 400 Blows during the sale as it has somehow eluded me so far. Question I have is, does it still come in the original packaging or does it only come in the normal clear case? Or is it whatever the seller has?

It will just depend on what the seller has, and even that doesn't seem to be consistent. I was in the local Barnes and Noble a couple of weeks ago, and they had the new packaging. I stopped by last night and they had the old packaging.

I really hope it goes long enough for The Battle of Algiers, but I am not holding my breath.

Just ordered @ B&N B3G1F and 15% coupon:

Black Moon
Zazie dans Le Metro
People on Sunday

All of them are $27,99 now, so $18.66 each before coupon. Cheaper then with the 50% off sale

If this is true it's certainly some of the best news I've heard recently. I've been dying to see some of Michael Mann's work enter the C collection! Watching Thief in HD with Tangerine Dream's score given appropriate DTS HD MA treatment is drool-inducing. As is a C release of Manhunter and not mentioning a Criterion version of Heat which should be lightyears ahead of the inferior WHV effort from 2009.

Then again, this might not pan out at all, but nevertheless, a very interesting prospect indeed!

Does anyone know when the B&N sale will happen? Is it 50% off Criterion? If so, I want to grab the following: Bigger Than Life, Hunger, Still Walking, Solaris, and maybe Summer Hours and The Double Life of Veronique. Does anyone have any experience with B&N shipping to Canada? Is it still worth it? Thanks guys!

Damn I ordered the same movies, well Au Revoir Les Enfants instead of People on Sunday, yesterday without knowing about the 15% coupon. Plus Black Moon was $2 more than it is today. I'm out $9. Oh well. Shouldn't complain as it is roughly the same as the sale prices and get them a few weeks early. I would re-order and return the first shipment to the store but that just seems like too much of a hassle for $9.

Nice. I can scratch People on Sunday, Black Moon and Kiss Me Deadly from my list already.

Even with Il tax they were only $55 and change.

...and shipped. This seems to be some kind of a record for B&N. Now to wait 60 days.

Don't think I've seen their Criterion sale go longer than two weeks, but if it has and I'm just fuzzy about it, it definitely won't go beyond three.

Have they shipped or are they 'scheduled to ship'? I'm generally pretty okay with B&N but they do have an annoying way of immediately freezing orders into 'shipped' status where they can't be changed or canceled even though they don't actually ship until later.
