Greekak229 and PowellPressburger will correct me if I'm wrong...but if the LG 550 has the same features as the Momitsu 799...it will:

1. Allow blu-ray discs from regions A, B, and C to be played by inputting a code on the remote before the disc is inserted.

2. DVDs from any of the regions (1 to 9) should play automatically without having to input any code.

3. The conversation of European PAL to North American NTSC is taken care of by the player, so there is no need for a PAL compatible TV and/or a converter of any sort to do the PAL to NTSC conversion.

Hope this helps!
That's absolutely correct with the LG 550. All you gotta do is press two buttons on the remote and bam, you're watching Region B movies.

I see neither one of us got any answers. Looks like the people here are more interested in discussing how to save 2 bucks on a blu-ray, when the sale starts and replacement cases. I miss talking about the films themselves.

Just checked my Criterion BD of M. The english version does not have subtitles. (1080i)

The only info I found on the print itself was that it was found in the BFI vaults in 2005. (the english version seems to have much more damage, so I doubt any kind of extensive restoration was performed)

Right now I am more interested in the Second Run dvds (the Czech New Wave films have better transfers than the Facets releases I have seen) and a couple from MoC (one of my favs Funeral Parade of Roses).
CG, I have an LG BH200 that you hit 3 buttons or so and it plays all blu-ray regions and it has also been changed by a disc to play all dvd regions. I do not know, but Rich says so, if the Momitsu or the other model will play all region DVD playback. Check, as I know you have and want many dvd's. If I remember correctly, it does not convert from PAL, but my Pioneer Kuro does it for me. So not all region-free players can convert PAL. On blu-ray discs though, the main feature is almost always authored in 1080P/24, so regardless of region on the blu-ray disc it will play fine on any tv as that is a blu-ray standard and not a PAL/NTSC thing. The extras are usually not in 108P/24, they are encoded in PAL normally. That means that unless your tv can accept PAL and convert or play it, your disc player better. I also have an OPPO 83 and it can be modded to play all regions to. It can also convert from PAL. Hope this helps.

Oh hell. I'd been planning on dusting off and retasking my old HTPC to do region B duties but being a lazy slob has served as a natural check on that plan.

This, however...this sounds pretty easy...

Damn.

I mostly want dvds from Region 2 companies like Mr Bongo Films (the Rocha films and the 3 Alexander Dovzhenko films), Second Run (the Czech New Wave films like my fav Daisies), BFI (Rivette), Raro Video (Chelsea Girls) and MoC (Funeral Parade of Roses).

So I will try to just find a player that could play DVD/Blu from atleast Region 2 without a problem. Thanks.

I just read about this on the Bits, and thought some of you might be interested. It appears Criterion and Trickster (?) are having a tribute to Kurosawa at Comic Con:

And here is the original Bits story:

EDIT: I am wrong! The main features do have SDH. Supplements do not.
I'm glad that you're wrong. Both of my parents are REALLY hard of hearing, so I always put on the subtitles for them, and now I'm just used to it. It irritates me when movies do not have english subtitles.

I am open for some Criterion suggestions. I own Seven Samurai, Paris, Texas, The Night of the Hunter, Pale Flower, Kiss Me Deadly, Fear and Loathing, Bottle Rocket. I have ordered High and Low and Carlos. I already plan on buying Yojimbo/sanjuro and Videodrome at the B&N sale. I like all types of films so I am open to suggestions. And if I don't like a BD i can always trade it.

Some absolute must-own Criterions, me thinks, include 400 Blows, Bigger Than Life, Modern Times, and Sweet Smell of Success, among those other ones that you have. M is another great pick-up too.

Seven Samurai, being the monumental achievement that it is, would be my suggestion for your first Criterion.

I would recommend A Christmas Tale, which is my favorite so far Army of Shadows, Au revoir les enfants, The Man who Fell To Earth if you can get a copy, Ride with the Devil, Monsoon Wedding, and Pierrot le Fou. And if you don't like them it will be easy to trade or sell them for others.
