This may seem off topic, but does anyone miss the "old" Criterion?
Y'know the one that understood that Robocop, and Spinal Tap were every bit as good as The Grand Illusion and The Seventh Seal?

I heard they have a hard time catching up. And the carriers are not allowed to work more than 8 hours. All mail remaining in their bags has to be brought back to the warehouse. The management refuses to pay a cent in overtime. They canceled the clean-floor policy. This slows things quite a bit.

Perhaps one day, using a battered former rental copy of Michael Bay's film (Criterion edition) as a blueprint, humanity will develop an effective strategy for contending with NEOs. Armageddon might very well serve as the template of our salvation. I think that qualifies it as "important."

Artistically, Armageddon and The Man With The Movie Camera both have an average shot length of 2.3 seconds. This obviously is no coincidence, and Criterion recognized that Mr. Bay is nothing less than the heir of the Soviet montage movement and wisely canonized him for it.

Now The Rock...that's utter rubbish.

"He's got space dementia."

Enough said.

argh, The fact that all of those Cassavetes films got recent upgrades to HD on netflix streaming (recent= in the past year) makes me think there is an upgrade coming sooner rather than later. I am more than likely getting Berlin Alexanderplatz and Rohmer's Six Moral Tales so fingers crossed for those...

I want to know the same thing myself. I want to know about The Lady Vanishes as well. I also thought I read somewhere where someone said that Criterion is suppose to have the rights to Foreign Correspondent. I should've asked him how'd he know that. I hope it's true. Best thing we can do is hope.

I wish Criterion could release 'Silence of the Lambs' on Blu-ray. The MGM Blu isn't anything to write home about. And you would think a movie as popular as this would have ATLEAST gotten a Digi-book release.

Most are blind buys to me, though I don't know if 2 Samuel Fuller's flicks would be too much but I can't decide on which one I want more. I'm thinking of replacing one of the two by Beauty & The Beast, but still unsure.

There's no way a Samuel Fuller Film is too much. Drop Naked, Mike Leigh is annoying Director.

Not sure I want all the Cassavetes, but I'd certainly like some of them on blu-ray.
Would get any of Rohmer's as soon as they became available...

You guys notice the pattern? Robocop, This is Spinal Tap and Silence of the Lambs are all MGM releases.

Criterion no longer has the rights to release those titles on disc, in any form.

That is true, but a lot of it is also union mandate, in addition to the corporation's decision, to only do the minimum, because they are super angry at how things turned out. They're trying to overturn the decision in court, and lodge a human rights complaint because the new deal is discriminatory against new workers. It's all a little ridiculous. I agree with both sides on a lot of issues, and think they're both being stupid about the whole thing. The CUPW seems to want too much, and are making all unions look bad. But that's a discussion for another thread.

I would love for Criterion to be able to get their hands on Spinal Tap again. I would double dip on the BD for that, as those special features would be fantastic. I kinda wish Criterion would take over the Christopher Guest films as well, although they are owned by WB. It's going to be awhile before those see BD. I would kill for A Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman.

Me too. Ain't gonna happen soon I guess. Maybe one title at a time if we're lucky. Criterion recently released just one Truffaut, one Cocteau and one Malle so I'm afraid we're gonna strike out.

They need to upgrade The Lady Vanishes soon. If only because it's one of my favorite and most watched movies of all time. I think my Criterion DVD is wearing out I've watched it so much. I also can't wait to see the ridiculous opening model shot in HD. Will be great.

About two years ago, I started collecting Hitchcock films. The stuff I don't own include Jamaica Inn and Under Capricorn (waiting for better releases if they ever come), a few of the "public domain" titles, and The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes because I figured Criterion would inevitably upgrade them to Blu. So, please, Criterion release these. And while you're at it, convince MGM to give you back the rights to Notorious, Rebecca, and Spellbound!

I think Under Capricorn is in public domain. I've seen it available to watch (legally and for free) on archive.org

Although, it has big names and it's a Hitchcock film I think it's terribly dull (and it led to the demise of Transatlantic Films if I'm not mistaken). UC and The Paradine Case are the only Hitchcock films I don't really care for.

True it's not the most exciting film out there, but it's got Jack Cardiff as DP.

That is the only Hitchcock movie I cannot make it through. It's so incredibly boring. Let it stay in public domain. I don't think anyone is really dying for that to be released.
