Isn't Kwaidan also supposedly in the works?

I believe so, yes. They've also revealed on Facebook that they are in the very early stages of preparing The Leopard. Also, anything that is getting a UK/European release that Criterion still has US rights to is highly probable - The Red Shoes, Great Expectations, The 39 Steps, etc.

Really hoping Criterion gets to release this on DVD and BD.

Added this to his Great Movies List this week.

*** Above post.. THE LEOPARD would be assume in HD!

I also believe the RED SHOES U.S. release is long overdue, along with Black Narcissus. (Aware of the region free UK release)

The pre-order is up for "Paris, Texas" at Amazon, Beta. Both placeholders say DVD on Amazon's listing, but one of the pictures has the Criterion blu-ray sticker on it.

Highly probable, IMO:

Amarcord
Beauty and the Beast
Brazil
Diabolique
High & Low
The Lady Vanishes
M
Seven Samurai
Vagabond
Yojimbo/Sanjuro

If you know that they have a deal with IFC and now one with MGM, they will be releasing those titles first. So I don't think they will be releasing stuff like Beauty and the Beast anytime soon. I could see M and Walkabout though.

I see in early 2010:

1. The rest of the IFC deal.
2. Some MGM titles like The Night Of The Hunter, Sweet Smell of Success, Kubrick's The Killing, etc.
3. Vivre sa vie (and Hopefully "Weekend")
4. Another Fellini
5. Other things that have been rumored via facebook.

I would love another fellini. M and Amarcord would be amazing.

Any speculation on which IFC titles it will be?

Hmmm. While I would welcome any DVD catalog title as a BD release, I'm surprised "Walkabout" made your list. It doesn't seem like one of their more popular titles and there's nothing particularly striking about its cinematography.

Oh well. I'm sure I'd pick it up, but I'd rather have some of those other titles first.

Walkabout was one of the first 13 listed when Criterion announced it's move to blu. All have been released except Walkabout and Contempt (which they lost the rights to)

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

There is reportedly a masters of Cinema edition of M coming out in February. Only seen a shot of the cover, no specs yet. If it's as good as their previous Sunrise disc, then we may not even need a Criterion edition.

Because it is a great film, that's why. There are lots great movies about people whether the individuals themselves were morally upstanding people or not. A great film is a great film regardless of whatever or whoever it is about. And for the record, Mr. Guevara had both good and bad qualities in him. He's a fascinating character in history.

Reasons? If the foreign edition is better, or the only edition available, why not?

I might give it a rental, yor're in that regard,Brian De Palma's Scarface was a good film and the character also was'nt thse nicest guy in the world and people wear T shirts with him on it as well. The same can go for the Godfather films, even though they are fiction. Makes me wonder if they will make a film called "Fidel" eventially.

Well it most likely won't be the only edition available and I think Criterion has earned the benefit of the doubt as far as HD restorations go.

Pre-ordered it with the other two..... now I'll have to keep an eye on my order to ensure they don't try to send me a DVD version.

I think we all are; looks like a rare mistake for Amazon. Someone's just got to be bothered writing to tell them.

Hi everyone,

As mentioned earlier, I've been wanting to a mobile spreadsheet to carry around on my cell phone for Criterion releases. I figured with the sales coming up and the holidays, it would be nifty to have a spreadsheet to carry around on my cell phone with the exact list and directors and also a rating for most of the films and good to have a reference when I check out the releases at the stores.

So, I went ahead and created one that covers the majority of the Criterion releases (indicating DVD and BD releases). Country, Year and I also incorporated a rating, which I know is objectionable but it's based off a review score from a well-known American film critic who I tend to agree with most of the time.

Anyway, hope this helps some of you. Here are the files (Excel File / PDF file)
