I haven't really looked at the details yet but if I can replace my current NetFlix discs+streaming account with NetFlix discs + Hulu plus streaming for roughly the same amount...

I will. I remember when it was cheap. Now it's just a big ripoff.

The bolded at some point has been rumored to come (but prob not until next year). Andrei Rublev might take a while though. Also you can always re-sale anything by Criterion so don't hold back if you want something.

Not to continue this, but I didn't respond to your post. I responded to the guy asking what the point of your post could possibly be.

It seems like Netflix is always raising its prices.

I can imagine the types of responses I might get (that it's hard to say, everyone has different tastes, they're all good, etc) but are there any Criterion movies released in the past decade or so (most Criterions people have been mentioning seem to be older films) that are just enjoyable, rewatchable, not too serious films that you would recommend? More specifically, a film the average person might like - for example everyone who has commented on it seems to love Fish Tank and it seems modern enough and as though the average person would enjoy it (not saying it's a light film or a mindless one though). I only ask cause many Criterion movies may be good films (Hunger, Antichrist, etc.) but are tough to watch and may not be totally rewatchable. So paradoxical in a way, a Criterion movie that mainstream audiences would like if they saw it. Maybe something like Fish Tank and An Education (which I know isn't part of the Criterion collection).

@Dixon

The wife and I enjoyed "The Darjeeling Limited" very much. Somewhat serious but great humour and a wonderful story!

Well that was nice of Amazon Canada. I had to cancel my order of Naked, and re-order it from B&N because they decided that they weren't shipping it for another 2 months, because the Phil Ochs DVD I wanted has been delayed until then. Urgh. It's a blessing in disguise, as it's cheaper by 7 bucks with the 15% code, and it's going to ship faster. Amazon Canada's boasting a price of 26.92, and won't ship for another 4-9 days. B&N claims usually in 24 hours, which for Canadians translates into 1-2 days. I really wanted to watch this one now, after watching Prisoner of Azkaban last night.

It's a bit of a toss up. Some of your list have been mention as coming to Blu-ray but nothing official per say. It's not an easy pick since the sale make's the DVD prices interesting if you really want the movie but I would say that in most cases you would be safe with a lot of these choices for a while without much of a chance on double dips very soon.

We are going to cancel. They have crossed the line to where the service just isn't worth it. If I ever get a way to watch Hulu+ on our TV, I might try that.

The different in prices for the B&N sales compare to Amazon Canada on Criterion is pretty deep. I got four Blu-ray for $19 (ok US but still) and even with the shipping which is $7 the entire order is about half of what I would have been paying with Amazon Canada as they have most of them at $35+

Oh I know. Naked was a pre-order I made back at the beginning of June, because at the time, it was cheaper than Amazon US: 26.92 vs 27.99, and I wasn't even thinking about the B&N sale. They just lost themselves a sale, as I cancelled the order, and went to B&N. I had already placed 2 orders with B&N, one last week, and one yesterday.

I see you don't have a lot of older movies (except maybe the Alien movies). Why not go with The Great Dictator with Charlie Chaplin. It's a comedy and very accessible in my opinion. Sure it's not the same type of comedy that we have today but still very relevant as a message. That might make a good introduction to Criterion for you. If you enjoy drama maybe something like Black Narcissus could work for you? Not exactly what people think about when they hear Criterion. It's a movie that is accessible and the cinematography in it is beautiful, well acted and a wonderful story.

Of course my advice for anyone who is not to familiar with Criterion is to rent some of them first before buying and see. It is true that a lot of the movies in this collection are not average and it's not something for everyone. But the fact that these movies are not average is what make's them so interesting to watch.

I'm definitely axing Hulu this week as my trial ends. Half the time the interface doesn't work or films freeze every two seconds. I got some value out of it, but frankly it needs a lot of work.

I think we've known all along that Netflix was basically giving away streaming and that something had to give eventually, but I didn't expect my monthly bill to double. They must show consumers that this price uptick is going toward licensing more and better content. I have about 250 titles in my streaming queue but only a dozen or so that I am eager to watch.

I do use Netflix streaming quite a bit, though, and I use their discs less and less, but what is in my queue is mostly slightly obscure stuff that I can't get through streaming or on disc through the public library or Redbox.

I'm tempted to cut Netflix altogether because I know they will lower their prices if enough people complain or cancel.

It sounds like Yahoo might be buying Hulu, which is a shame because Netflix really needs to. If they had the Criterion deal I would probably continue my Netflix subscription unchanged.
I have heard about some of the problems with Hulu+, which is one thing that makes me hesitant. Luckily we have access to a university library, which tends to have a lot of stuff (including most if not all Criterions), so that helps a lot. We might just end up using the library for older stuff, and redbox for the occasional new release.

I really like Broadcast News, and have watched it twice since it came out on blu. Chaplin might be a good idea, as was suggested, as long as you are okay with black and white films. If you like thrillers you should definitely try Blow Out. I just bought Something Wild last night, so I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but that might be another good one for you.

According to DVDBeaver, these two DVDs have dreadful, non-anamorphic transfers. I'd love to see both upgraded.

Broadcast News was great, it's low on my Criterion rankings (7/10), because there are so many other films in the collection I like more, but that's still a high rank as far as my film collection goes. It's very rewatchable. Albert Brooks is totally awesome.

As far as Something Wild goes, I've also just ordered it, and should hopefully have it within a week.

Didn't Criterion say on Twitter they would be announcing some new Bluray titles this Friday. Might want to at least hold off until then. As far as DVD's I'm sticking with titles that are OOP.

I ordered all of my titles at once on B&N and one is Leon Morin. Ship date on it according to their site is July 26 while everything else is August 1st?? Really??
I can cancel the preorder, but since it shows a earlier date I'm not sure it would have much effect. Anyone else order online? and if so what do the ship dates look like?
