According to the information at this website http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23 a Franju film will be getting a blu-ray upgrade some time in the not too distant future. I would have to think this will be Eyes Without a Face. (one of the better french horror films IMO)

Hopefully when it gets blu-ed, it will include the reworked (director's cut?) version. But also have the original theatrical cut as an option.

Perhaps it's awaiting a theatrical re-release of some sort first?

It really is too bad that the Gaumont BD of EWaF is not english language friendly, I understand the transfer is outstanding. The Criterion will be worth the wait for its supplements alone.

Just picked up Seven Samurai and Stagecoach. These will be my first Criterion movies, so hopefully I will enjoy Seven Samurai. I have seen Stagecoach before.

A lot of those DVD's may see a upgrade, but with some of them being priced at 13 dollars after coupon and 50% off I had a hard time passing on them. Especially some that are OOP. Could be years before they get the license back from Studiocanal. Like in the case of Ran....

I don't think I've heard that title thrown around before, thanks!

I think you already know that you're asking for films that don't meet the make-up of a typical Criterion. Major studios are all about churning out not-too-serious films specifically designed to appeal to the average person, which is why Criterion seeks out other stuff to release. The only things that match your criteria IMHO are Broadcast News and Something Wild, and I don't know how rewatchable they are.
Um no, I'm not familiar enough or in love with the CC to deem it "awesome" and to show it off. I'm just looking for Criterions for myself that have a good rewatchable factor. And as for Paul Blart Mall Cop, I'd never sink so low. Thanks for the recs.

If you enjoy drama maybe something like Black Narcissus could work for you? Not exactly what people think about when they hear Criterion. It's a movie that is accessible and the cinematography in it is beautiful, well acted and a wonderful story.

Of course my advice for anyone who is not to familiar with Criterion is to rent some of them first before buying and see. It is true that a lot of the movies in this collection are not average and it's not something for everyone. But the fact that these movies are not average is what make's them so interesting to watch.
Thanks. I'm sure each Criterion is an experience but I'm looking for ones that are rewatchable - which I probably should have mentioned in my original post.

Thanks for your reaffirming votes for Chaplin and Something Wild.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I will look into them shortly.

Have been looking at canceling Netflix, but just hadn't gotten around to it. Now with the price increase, I have to act. Pretty much all the recents and classic films they had for streaming, I've already seen or am not interested. If I really wasn't to see something, it'll come around to HBO or TCM sooner or later (and there's also Amazon and iTunes). I joined to see foreign gilms that don't show up on cable, and Netflix loosing Criterions means less for me to see, so I've been spending more time on Hulu. Other than the occasional internet glitch, I haven't had a problems with either company's streaming (on Apple TV and Sony player). Interfaces could be nicer, but no real problems.

...and who's got time to see more movies?? Busy enough with 50% off Criterions!

I'm definitely axing Hulu this week as my trial ends. Half the time the interface doesn't work or films freeze every two seconds. I got some value out of it, but frankly it needs a lot of work.

I think we've known all along that Netflix was basically giving away streaming and that something had to give eventually, but I didn't expect my monthly bill to double. They must show consumers that this price uptick is going toward licensing more and better content. I have about 250 titles in my streaming queue but only a dozen or so that I am eager to watch.

I do use Netflix streaming quite a bit, though, and I use their discs less and less, but what is in my queue is mostly slightly obscure stuff that I can't get through streaming or on disc through the public library or Redbox.

I'm tempted to cut Netflix altogether because I know they will lower their prices if enough people complain or cancel.

It sounds like Yahoo might be buying Hulu, which is a shame because Netflix really needs to. If they had the Criterion deal I would probably continue my Netflix subscription unchanged.

Anyways, who else will be cancelling Netflix in September?
I'm considering it...at least, the DVD/BD rental option. No way I'm paying $18 a month for (1) DVD/BD at a time, when I'm paying $12 now...I'll probably keep streaming, as my wife uses it and with (2) kids at home, it's a convenient option.

I've always loved TCM but they've been really good the past year or so.

And I didn't really think about it in these terms until you said that but yeah, they really have replaced a lot of my streaming.

They really want people to pay $18 a month and only 1 film at a time? Those crooks...

Wasn't going to buy anything because I have been spending so much this month, but ended up ordering Blu ray's of Vivre Sa Vie, Naked and pre-ordering High & Low.

I was thinking about not upgrading Beauty and the Beast since I own the DVD (the second release). However, I popped in the DVD last night and I was surprised by how bad it looked. Maybe I'm just spoiled by HD now. The problem is that trying to upgrade everything gets expensive!

A peak at an upcoming release (obviously fingers, but the red part looks like a chin because of the lower teeth showing?) October releases could have a couple of horror films and this is what it looks like:
