Canceled Hulu today (last day of trial). Movies shouldn't freeze during the opening studio logo. Some sort of freezing happened about 40% of the time during my trial and on two of the films I wanted to see most (The Phantom Carriage and World On A Wire* -- wasn't able to finish either despite multiple attempts). Since I don't have this problem with Netflix or any of my other internet apps, I assume it's a Hulu thing. Supposedly there are some supplements on Hulu as well but I didn't manage to find them. Perhaps none of the films I queued had supplements.

I like the discs, too, mainly because I can check out the supplements and, in the case of library copies, the booklets. I don't mind getting them on DVD to sample, because ultimately HD picture isn't going to decide whether or not I purchase the disc.

* small solace in that I will see WoaW in a theater this summer.
Hmm, weird. I have not had any problems with Hulu+, except for one or two very minor issues that were resolved almost immediately. I have a ton of problems with netflix streaming though. I just watched Blow Out, and while I enjoyed it quite a bit, I cannot see myself watching it enough to justify a purchase right now. I think that I will pick it up if it goes oop though.

That damn pic cost me twenty bucks. It didn't talk me into The Seventh Seal but The Magician was sitting right there and we all know how much I like blind buys...

What could I do???

What future releases are everyone looking forward to?
I really want If..., The Killing (Kubricks my favorite director, and this comes with another movie) and High and Low.

Those are my most wanted but I'm also intrigued by the Phantom Carriage looks interesting even though I'm not a fan of silent films except for some Chaplin stuff. The Battle of the Algiers is my most anticipated so far for this year, but that might change by the end of the year. I'm hoping that we get some Hitchcock titles released soon like Rebecca, Spellbound, or Notorious (if they still have the rights to them)

Waiting on delivery of Great Dictator, Solaris and Diabolique from B&N... Went into local B&N and picked up The Thin Red Line of which I had only seen about the first hour (if even that) on Netflix. Popped disc in player to check it out and this is one beautiful looking film and transfer!

I love the menu screen that says "Director Terrence Malick recommends that The Thin Red Line be played loud."
hehehe... can't really oblige right now. Wife and kids asleep. Maybe later.

I would say "The Battle of Algiers" but that one is just too easy (At least from what I have seen, almost everyone in the site was waiting for that upgrade) so I will go with "The Complete Jean Vigo" . The fact that Criterion is releasing not just L'Atalante but his complete works are, indeed, fantastic news. Probably one of my most anticipated releases of the year, Criterion or not .

Ive been wanting L'atalante, since I heard its amazing, but its not available from Netflix. Hopefully as soon as the Criterion one releases they'll get some DVD's in!
Also speaking of amazing movies not available on Netflix, Pather Pachilia (sp?) really needs a better release.

I just looked it up and sadly they are Well since those are out of the question I hope that Rushmore or Royal Tenenbaums will get upgraded this year. More Kurosawa would never hurt

A collector could be both but basically I was just trying to make a (somewhat) funny distinction between "Regular Folks" (as in not necesarily into Blu-Ray or movies at all) and people that frequent this site but isn't Criterion snobs

The answer to the real question: for my part, both...

just finished up watching videodrome and while it wasn't my favorite movie in the collection, i thought it was still quite good and drummed up some interesting questions. As far as the "horror" aspect of it, I actually found it more intriguing that since the "horror" was placed in the realm of tv, it felt desensitized and not at all disconcerting... which is the most disconcerting part of it.

I'd like to add that if you don't own Naked, please consider picking it up. It truly is a masterpiece. That is all.

Secondly, calm down.

Third, the "regulars," including yours truly, in this thread are, for the most part, oozing sarcasm and insults daily. We just don't always put the "winky" faces to let you know. So, if you're not familiar with our daily banter then please refrain from stepping up before you get knocked back down.

Fourth, and most important rule of all, mind your own d*mn business.
I remember when Everlast of House of Pain said something to the effect of "step up to get knocked down" in a song and I thought it was funny then.

I still do.

I'd be curious to hear some (Criterion) titles you aren't fond of.

I know dvdbeaver can't always be trusted, but if I look at the screenshots The 400 Blows and The Magician impress me immensely, while Diabolique and Beauty and the Beast don't really cut it for me. Yes, they're more 'film like' but they don't seem as good as the other prints.

I just finished it and if you do get a commission make sure they pay you for The Seventh Seal because I'll probably be picking that up now too.

Just bought @ the local B&N store

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
House
Kagemusha
Kes
Kiss Me Deadly
Last Night at Marienbad
Night of the Hunter
Pale Flower
Repulsion
Vivre Sa Vie

All of them are blind buys except Fear & Loathing and Night of the Hunter.

I'll only blind buy I'll do is if it's ~$10 or Criterion of course.

I've only disliked two Criterion movies; Salo (ugh) and Fat Girl (still worth watching), thankfully I never bought them.

My best blind buys were Paris, Texas (beautiful movie) and Le Cercle Rouge, and Fish Tank. All amazing movies I would have never found had it not been for Criterion.

Also picked up some of the Eclipse Series;

Oshima's Outlaw Series
Aki's Proletariat Trilogy
Nikkatsu Noir
Chantal Akerman in the Seventies
Documentaries of Louis Malle
Early Bergman
Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women
Late Ozu

I don't dare tell my girlfriend how much money I've spent on movies this month

Diabolique looks really good. The Magician might be a bit more consistently impressive but they're both excellent transfers.
